Who knew sand fleas, those little gray, brown, and pink crustaceans your mother found stuffed in your pockets after a day at the beach, made such good striper bait? A lot of people, that’s who! Their effectiveness is well known among seasoned striper anglers; however, with more traditional baits like clams, bunker chunks, plugs, and shads getting all the attention, these little crabs are largely ignored.

The Tackle Box in Hazlet posted this photo of Cody Fleisher and the big blue he caught in the surf at the start of the week. The one positive thing that came out of the dismal Memorial Day Weekend Washout is that warmer water finally pushed in. And that triggered what everybody was hoping for: a better sea bass bite.

Stripers made a move, fluking remains a bit of a grind, and everybody is pumped for Friday’s black sea bass opener.There were also reports of blues around, black drum in the surf, a few weakfish, and blue claw crabs starting to come out of the mud. Raritan Bay, normally a striper hot spot this time of year, went quiet. Word has it they headed out to the ocean. There were good reports from the beach on plugs and bait, with clams taking credit for most of the fish.
