Designing fiber–gut microbiome interactions with active learning
Abstract Identifying synergies between dietary fibers and beneficial bacteria holds promise for precision interventions that optimize gut health, yet these interactions remain largely unexplored. Here we integrate machine learning, Bayesian optimization and high-throughput community construction to investigate how dietary fibers shape health-relevant functions of human gut microbial communities.

A gut sense for a microbial pattern regulates feeding - Nature
Abstract To coexist with its resident microorganisms, the host must have a sense to adjust its behaviour in response to them. In the intestine, a sense for nutrients transduced to the brain through neuroepithelial circuits guides appetitive choices1,2,3,4,5. However, a sense that allows the host to respond in real time to stimuli arising from resident gut microorganisms remains to be uncovered.
Role of the upper airway microbiota in respiratory virus and bacterial pathobiont dynamics in the first year of life - Nature Communications
Abstract The mechanisms by which respiratory viruses predispose to secondary bacterial infections remain poorly characterized. Using 2,409 nasopharyngeal swabs from 300 infants enrolled in a prospective cohort study in Botswana, we perform a detailed analysis of factors that influence the dynamics of bacterial pathobiont colonization during infancy. We quantify the extent to which viruses increase the acquisition of Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

The External Microbiome Communicates with the Developing Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Embryo Through the Chorion and Influences Developmental Trajectory
Abstract The microbiome has a significant influence on host physiological processes including energy metabolism and neurobiology. However, current knowledge is largely limited to post-embryonic development, highlighting a notable gap in host-microbe communication during embryonic development, particularly in oviparous organisms. This is because the developing embryo is protected from the external environment by the chorion and typically considered to be sterile.

Pla2g12b drives expansion of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins - Nature Communications
Abstract Vertebrates transport hydrophobic triglycerides through the circulatory system by packaging them within amphipathic particles called Triglyceride-Rich Lipoproteins. Yet, it remains largely unknown how triglycerides are loaded onto these particles. Mutations in Phospholipase A2 group 12B (PLA2G12B) are known to disrupt lipoprotein homeostasis, but its mechanistic role in this process remains unclear.
Rawls at 100
Happy birthday, John Rawls! We celebrate the political philosopher’s centenary, as well as the 50th anniversary of the publication of “A Theory of Justice.” The American political philosopher John Rawls was born in 1921 and published A Theory of Justice in 1971. In celebration of these 100th and 50th anniversaries, we provide this reading list of great Rawls-related essays that have appeared in Boston Review. One of the pieces is by Rawls himself, and came to us through Owen Fiss.

The emergence of microbiome centres
As microbiome science expands, academic centres scramble to fill many needs, from service provider to industry liaison. A newly created network aims to share strategies and accelerate knowledge transfer, and invites others to join the efforts. Microbiomes — assemblages of interacting microorganisms, such as bacteria, archaea, fungi and viruses — are increasingly recognized as being crucial to the functioning of ecosystems, ranging from the deep sea to the human body.

The Problem with Sam Harris’ Moral Theory
The neuroscientist and podcaster says he found a way to derive morality from science—but it’s not that simple In a famous passage of his 1738 Treatise of Human Nature, philosopher David Hume discussed an important distinction. Hume observed of other books on ethics that “the author proceeds for some time in the ordinary way of reasoning and establishes the being of a God, or makes observations concerning human affairs” when a subtle but crucial shift occurs in their writing.
Thom Brooks, Philosophy Unbound: The Idea of Global Philosophy - PhilPapers
Authors Abstract The future of philosophy is moving towards “global philosophy.” The idea of global philosophy is the view that different philosophical approaches may engage more substantially with each other to solve philosophical problems. Most solutions attempt to use only those available resources located within one philosophical tradition. A more promising approach might be to expand the range of available resources to better assist our ability to offer more compelling solutions.
A Special Supplement: A New Philosophy of the Just Society
A Special Supplement: A New Philosophy of the Just Society A Theory of Justice by John Rawls Harvard, 607 pp., $3.95 (paper) I I think that this book is the most substantial and interesting contribution to moral philosophy since the war, at least if one thinks only of works written in English.
RAWLS: Anything, everything can happen in EMS
During that 24 hours, we can run calls the whole shift or sit at the station learning new skills through continuing education or in-house training classes. No two calls are alike. Each chest pain presents itself differently and has varying complaints. Most all paramedics have a preference of calls to run on, but almost all dread a pediatric call.
Adam Cureton, Prudence and Responsibility to Self in an Identity Crisis - PhilPapers
A comprehensive theory of rational prudence would explain how a person should adjudicate among the conflicting interests of her past, present, future and counterfactual selves. For example, when a person is having an identity crisis, perhaps because she has suddenly become disabled, she may be left with no sense of purpose to keep her going.
741. Say not the Struggle Naught availeth. Arthur Hugh Clough. The Oxford Book of English Verse
SAY not the struggle naught availeth, The labour and the wounds are vain, The enemy faints not, nor faileth, And as things have been they remain. If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars; 5 It may be, in yon smoke conceal'd, Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers, And, but for you, possess the field. For while the tired waves, vainly breaking, Seem here no painful inch to gain, 10 Far back, through creeks and inlets making, Comes silent, flooding in, the main.
50 Years After Hiroshima
The fiftieth year since the bombing of Hiroshima is a time to reflect about what one should think of it. Is it really a great wrong, as many now think, and many also thought then, or is it perhaps justified after all? I believe that both the fire-bombing of Japanese cities beginning in the spring of 1945 and the later atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6 were very great wrongs, and rightly seen as such.

The Best of All Games
John Rawls (1921 - 2002) was an eminent philosopher, perhaps the greatest America ever produced. He was also a devoted baseball fan. Contrary to widespread reports, he was never offered a contract to play professionally and, in fact, had not even played varsity baseball in college. Yet he had played on his high school team and starred on intramural and departmental softball games at Harvard.

We Laughed, We Cried
Flann O'Brien's triumph. “If we don’t cherish the work of Flann O’Brien,” said Anthony Burgess, the late English novelist (he of A Clockwork Orange and Earthly Powers), “we are stupid fools who don’t deserve to have great men.” Burgess can rest in peace on that score, at least. Flann O’Brien’s work is becoming about as cherished as avant-garde literature can ever expect to be, and not just among the cognoscenti. Flann O’Brien is chic. University courses on his writings proliferate.
Cynthia A. Stark, How to Include the Severely Disabled in a Contractarian Theory of Justice - PhilPapers
This paper argues that, with modification, Rawls's social contract theory can produce principles of distributive justice applying to the severely disabled. It is a response to critics who claim that Rawls's assumption that the parties in the original position represent fully cooperating citizens excludes the disabled from the social contract. I propose that this idealizing assumption should be dropped at the constitutional stage of the contract where the parties decide on a social minimum.

The Best Books on Human Rights
How did you get interested in human rights? I got interested in human rights through two other prior interests. One was an interest in moral philosophy, in particular the question of relativism: whether there are genuinely objective and universal standards of morality. That’s what really fascinated me as an undergraduate and that’s what I went on to write my doctoral thesis on at Oxford. The other topic that always interested me was international law.
The Best Books on Political Philosophy
Jonathan Wolff is the Blavatnik Chair in Public Policy in association with Wolfson College. He was formerly Professor of Philosophy and Dean of Arts and Humanities at UCL. Hi work has largely concentrated on issues of distributive justice, with a particular interest in the relation between theory and policy. He is a Trustee of the Responsible Gambling Trust, and writes a monthly column for the Guardian . How did you get into political philosophy? It goes quite a long way back.
The best books on Political Philosophy
How did you get into political philosophy? It goes quite a long way back. As a teenager, I was very interested in left wing politics. I remember, age 15 or 16, going up to Tottenham Court Road and Charing Cross Road visiting Collets bookshop and buying pamphlets by Marx and Lenin — some of which I still have and use in teaching. I hadn’t thought of philosophy or political philosophy as a subject of study, but I was very interested in political ideas.
