Opinion: Be wary of misinformation on Medicare Advantage plans - Springfield Business Journal
With Medicare’s annual enrollment period here, seniors are bombarded with ads and calls promoting Medicare Advantage plans, often emphasizing extra perks like vision, dental and gym memberships. Unfortunately, much of this information can be misleading or incomplete. Choosing the wrong Medicare Advantage plan – or any plan – based on inaccurate information can have long-term consequences.
John W. Ray: Fentanyl crisis demands collective action
Butte has an out-of-control epidemic — fentanyl use, which gets worse daily. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. This epidemic harms and can kill users as well as negatively impacting their families and the community at large in areas such as increased crime, lowered productivity, poverty and stressing the health care system, which makes it a public problem calling for a community response.

John W. Ray: Butte is safer as a result of Superfund cleanup
As a new year begins, it is a good time to take stock of where we are in terms of Superfund. Given the public health and economic implications of the Superfund cleanup of Butte, where does Superfund stand now? Butte residents, particularly parents, are concerned whether or not the places where they live are safe from the threats posed by heavy metal contamination. Is Superfund a drag on economic development? Is environmental justice being promoted? Is cleanup progress occurring?
“Never say die” and dictionaries for the living
Word Origins And How We Know Them Anatoly Liberman's column on word origins, The Oxford Etymologist, appears on the OUPblog each Wednesday. By Anatoly Liberman June 1st 2022 Last week, I promised to write something about idioms in dictionaries and on that note finish my discussion of English set phrases (unless there are questions, suggestions, or vociferous cries for more).
John W. Ray: Without equity this is no true equality
While we initially organized political communities to provide protection and order, the state’s ultimate goal evolved to promoting justice. Justice means rendering to each person their due. As human beings with dignity, all people are equally due the right to a clean and healthy natural environment. Frequently, the enjoyment of this right to a clean environment is denied on the basis of race, ethnicity or income.

Whip, Spur and Lash
Mesopotamia comes across as a sad place. Almanacs of the Middle East will tell you that it has its fair share of sunshine, but it is easier to imagine it under a leaden sky. Mesopotamia – Chaldaea, Sumer, Assyria, Babylonia, Iraq, or any other of its many names – consists of a patchy flood plain, without much cohesion and with wide-open frontiers on two of its sides. To the south is desert and ocean, while the east is overshadowed by the Iranian plateau, where enemies can gather in numbers.

Guest view: We can't forget about the pole plant
Guest view: We can't forget about the pole plant John Ray While Superfund attention is focused on the Consent Decree for Uptown Butte, we cannot lose sight of another Superfund site — the Montana Pole Plant. Currently, modifications to the remedy at the Pole Plant are under consideration by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), which is the lead agency at the site. The Pole Plant, because of dioxin on site, is in some ways the most acutely dangerous Superfund site in Butte.

Let us never forget that government is...
Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country. Franklin D. Roosevelt
