Why the big rise in China’s LLDPE exports could be a long-term trend

CHINA’S linear-low density polyethylene (LLDPE) market is following the trend I blogged about in my posts on polypropylene (PP) and high-density PE (HDPE). Exports have surged, at least partly if not wholly in response to the global supply shortages resulting from the Iran crisis: In January until May this year, exports reached 478,289 tonnes versus just 100,175 tonnes during the same period last year. The surge occurred in March-May following the February start of the conflict.

China PP exports could reach 5m tonnes in 2026

CHINA, assuming the January–May trends continue for the full year, looks set to see net polypropylene (PP) exports of 4m tonnes in 2026. In order to put the shock to the global PP business in context, consider this: in 2020, at the height of the “China in, China out” boom in PP imports to be re-exported as finished goods during the pandemic, net imports reached 6.1m tonnes. Switching the focus to just exports, today’s second chart shows China’s top 15 export destinations from 2022 until 2026.
