Abstract Natural killer (NK) cells expressing inhibitory receptors that recognize self human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I molecules gain enhanced functionality—a process influenced by genetic polymorphism that dictates the strength of interactions between inhibitory receptors and their HLA ligands. Inhibitory CD94/NKG2A binds HLA-E loaded with epitopes derived from polymorphic HLA class I signal peptides (SPs).

1. Introduction Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract and includes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) [1,2,3,4]. The incidence of IBD is rising worldwide, particularly in Asia, and prevalence is predicted to reach 1% by 2030 in many regions [5,6]. The etiology remains unknown.
