To be a novelist, be an amateur psychologist

I have said in this column before that your novel when you write it must have conflict, the hero or heroine against the villain or against serious obstacles, climbing a mountain or solving a crime for example. It also helps to understand what makes people tick and to work interesting character traits into your characters, their quirks and weaknesses (not just strengths). I don’t want to seem cynical but in a novel, happy and well-adjusted, if that’s all there is—that’s boring.

Last week we talked about picking a genre to write a novel and I listed them to include science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, thriller, literary fiction, monster, horror, historical fiction and westerns. I recommended that if you’re going to write a novel it’s probably a good idea to select a genre that is the type of book you like to read, because you’ll be familiar with the style and subject matter of such a book.

In novel writing the principal genres include science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, thriller, literary fiction, monster, horror, historical fiction and westerns. There are others. When you decide to write a novel it’s usually best that the genre you pick is the kind of book you yourself like to read. Based on the theory that if you’re a fan of the kind of book you’ll be writing, you’ll be more familiar with the subject matter and style of such a book.
