Universal Pre-K would block innovation, harm children
During his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden reminded everyone that “free” preschool for all 3- and 4-year-olds remains part of his agenda . The president left out the part that it would cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars and provide no long-term benefit for children. After 57 years of government-funded preschool through the failed Head Start program, policymakers still don’t know what early-childhood instruction methods set up children for success.
Political deck stacked against parents running for school board
“I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” Those were the famous words of Terry McAuliffe ’s failed gubernatorial campaign in Virginia last fall. The past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic exposed just how little control parents have over their children’s public school education. And their powerlessness did not end when many schools finally reopened their doors over a year into the pandemic.

Welfare for the Rich Foundations
Imagine if your gas station charged you its regular price for a gallon of gas, but billionaires only had to pay a nickel. This is pretty much how universities handle the rates they charge for overhead costs on research grants. Taxpayers pay a rate of almost 60%, while billionaire-backed foundations pay between 0% and 15%.

Subsidies will make the child care crisis worse. Empower families to solve it instead
Subsidies will make the child care crisis worse. Empower families to solve it instead Before the pandemic, finding good quality child care could be challenging. Now, it’s even harder. Parents of young children are being told to return to the workplace, only to find countless day cares closed. For many families, this constitutes a crisis. Unfortunately, President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan would keep it that way.

Before the pandemic, finding good quality child care could be challenging. Now, it’s even harder. Parents of young children are being told to return to the workplace, only to find countless day cares closed. For many families, this constitutes a crisis. Unfortunately, President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan would keep it that way. As currently written, the plan would introduce unprecedented federal spending on early childhood care and education.
Dangerous changes coming for Title IX
The Biden administration wants to force universities to change how they handle sexual-assault claims on campuses. Unfortunately, the changes would deny accused students their basic rights. We've been here before, during the Obama era. It didn't work then, and it won't work now. Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments was enacted nearly 50 years ago. It makes it illegal for any educational institution receiving federal funds to discriminate on the basis of sex.
No, Universal Pre-K, Child Care Subsidies Won’t Pay for Themselves
As the two cars approach head-on in their game of profligate chicken, two early-childhood programs are secured in the passenger seats of both: universal, federally funded pre-K and massive new federal child care subsidies. Proposed federal spending on these two early-childhood programs add up to $400 billion through 2028, a large chunk of the newest framework of the so-called Build Back Better legislative package released by the Biden administration totaling about $1.75 trillion.
Biden and Harris Promise Free Community College
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ free community college plan will increase costs for both students and taxpayers. Fortunately, the Biden-Harris promise of free community college appears less likely to make it into the final version of the Build Back Better Act, the $3.5 trillion tax-and-spend plan currently under debate in Congress.
How universal pre-k and child care would limit families' child care options
Is the progressive dream of universal pre-kindergarten and child care about to come true? The $3.5 trillion spending package now before Congress includes $450 billion for government-sponsored pre-k and child care. The plan would subsidize preschool for three- and four-year-olds and cap the amount families pay for child care at no more than 7 percent of their income.
$3.5 Trillion Bill Spends Big on Ineffective and Unpopular Preschool and Childcare Programs
The $3.5 trillion “reconciliation” spending bill containing the Biden Administration’s “Build Back Better” plan is making its way through Congress. The measure contains unprecedented new federal education spending, including universal preschool for all three- and four-year-old children, and expanded childcare subsidies capping what families pay at no more than 7 percent of their income.

COVID-19 Mitigation Practices and COVID-19 Rates in Schools: Report on Data from Florida, New York and Massachusetts
Abstract This paper reports on the correlation of mitigation practices with staff and student COVID-19 case rates in Florida, New York, and Massachusetts during the 2020-2021 school year. We analyze data collected by the COVID-19 School Response Dashboard and focus on student density, ventilation upgrades, and masking. We find higher student COVID-19 rates in schools and districts with lower in-person density but no correlations in staff rates.
