Off Camera | By John Paul Scotto | Issue 574 | The Sun Magazine
When I was a senior in high school, I became obsessed with the home movies Dad kept in his armoire, behind bottles of cologne. Every day I’d reach through a cloud of Brut and vanilla musk, remove a tape from the stack, and watch the footage alone in our basement, captivated by images of the kid I used to be. There I was at the age of eight, playing baseball in the backyard. Dad was recording me through the kitchen window, so I thought I was alone.
The Tunnel | By Donovan McAbee | Issue 574 | The Sun Magazine
It started with the mouse in the grass by the sidewalk, ants crawling on its face. Aidan wanted to touch it. I drew him back and held him. We talked about the gray fur and the tiny ants. He asked if the mouse was going to go home to his mama and daddy. No, I told him, the mouse won’t get to go home again. Maybe he goes to play with his friends. No, I said again, the mouse won’t get to play with his friends.
Sandwoman | By Maria Kuznetsova | Issue 572 | The Sun Magazine
My insomnia began just when my baby girl started sleeping through the night. Anytime my head hit the pillow, my heart pounded like a million galloping horses, and I would tremble and sweat and eventually get up and stand on our back porch to beg the gods for peace until I heard the birds chirping, inaugurating a new day, which I would spend dragging around my girl without even a modicum of rest. None of the herbs, medications, or mindfulness techniques I tried were able to move the needle.
The Only Ones | By Jessica Barksdale, Jackleen Holton, Elizabeth Knapp & Courtney LeBlanc | Issue 572 | The Sun Magazine
Old Mom Jessica Barksdale I failed at attachment. I failed at responsibility. I failed at wisdom, nurture, nature, separation, and calm. I excelled at role model, if what you wanted was wretched. I passed tired with flying colors, scored the best marks in pain. The legacy of all this is here with me now, a rubber-band ball of Can I have a do-over? No one died, but. No one is president or in jail. No one sings from the hilltops or injects fentanyl under a bridge.
Coach’s Kid | By John Paul Scotto | Issue 572 | The Sun Magazine
Some names and identifying details have been changed to protect privacy. — Ed. As a small boy I didn’t feel like I was built for this world. I was an overstimulated insomniac: alert, jittery, brimming with a desire to share my thoughts, which I quickly learned not to do. Whenever I let loose and spoke freely, the tedious amount of information that flowed out of my mouth annoyed and even angered people. At school I had to actively subdue my impulse to speak my mind if I wanted to pass as normal.
The Sun Magazine | The Psychic Is In | By Mishele Maron | Issue 572
In the summer of 1980, when I was ten years old, a stranger sneaked through our trailer’s unlocked side door at 2 AM. He lifted a few gold-plated necklaces from my mother’s wooden jewelry box, then entered my bedroom. When I woke, the man pulled his hands out of my underwear. I sat up and watched as he adjusted himself awkwardly, almost apologetically, in the chair he’d dragged from the kitchen to my bedside. His dark hair was illuminated by moonlight streaming through the windows.
I Tried to Forget My Whole Life. I'm Glad I Failed.
John Paul Scotto | Longreads | July 6, 2023 | 11 minutes (3,069 words) Dad and I were tossing a football in my yard. I was pleasantly surprised that my arm muscles retained the memory of a flawless throwing motion. The ball practically leaped out of my hand. “It’s a shame Coach Mike didn’t give you more playing time,” Dad said. “You had such power to the opposite field.” He was referencing my final baseball season, freshman year of high school, two decades earlier.
The Sun Magazine | All In The Family | By Mark Leviton | Issue 562
In America today there are more than 7 million adoptees — about 2 percent of the total population. Approximately 1.5 million of them are under the age of eighteen. Many were adopted as infants, but some spent a significant portion of their childhoods in shelters, foster homes, or foreign orphanages, or with parents who eventually lost their parental rights in the courts.
Beacon | By John Paul Scotto | Issue 556 | The Sun Magazine
Some identifying details have been changed to protect privacy. — Ed. You called as I pulled off the interstate on a sunny summer afternoon. You were grilling corn on your parents’ deck. You’d just gotten back from visiting your kids. You said you could see them only three times a week. You didn’t say the visits had to be supervised, but I assumed they did. “When did you get home from Maine?” I asked. “How did you know I was in Maine?” you said. I forgot you hadn’t told me that.
When Will Trump Finally Drop the Hammer on the Deep State?
“The great enemy of truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest -- but the myth -- persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought." - JFK The current Pravda-like media enjoys the comfort of existing within their own leftist echo chamber.
Fighting socialism
As wrong and warped as most leftists' views seem today, the reality is that most people on the left fight relentlessly for their cause. Can the majority of conservatives look themselves in the mirror and honestly say they fight for their beliefs and principles to the same degree as the left does? Our U.S. Constitution is the rock of America, the foundation for maintaining our way of life. It is the main cog within the engine of freedom. Freedom is fragile and needs to be cared for.
Andrew Cuomo, vain poster boy for government waste
Andrew Cuomo, the current governor of the state of New York and a leftist ideologue, is at it again, wasting more of the taxpayers’ hard-earned money. Cuomo is a governor who seems to have an affinity for vanity and an aversion to common sense. The egocentric Cuomo has now made it one of his priorities to change the color scheme of certain subway tiles. Governor Cuomo felt it necessary to add millions onto the cost of a project involving a couple of subway tunnels which were in need of tiles.
Defining Modern Liberalism
There is a long list of rules one must currently follow before one can be admitted into the club known as modern day liberalism, and a stringent philosophy each member of the club must subscribe to before becoming part of this leftist cult. A cult which is now deeply committed to illogic, virtue signaling and group thought. Entry into this socialist club is now dependent upon all of its members making a solemn pledge to exist within a state of perpetual childhood.

Lisa Page and Peter Strzok, the reported FBI lovebirds, are the poster children for the next “Don’t Text and Investigate” public service ads airing soon at an FBI office near you. Their extraordinary texting affair on their government phones has given the FBI a black eye, laying bare a raw political bias brought into the workplace that agents are supposed to check at the door when they strap on their guns and badges.
Losing America
When did certain members of our society all of sudden become selective regarding the laws they wished to be enforced ? Not too long ago we as a people could generally agree upon a certain set of core values. Today a smaller majority of the American people still believe in the US Constitution and many people are starting to lose focus on the things that really matter the most. When exactly did some US citizens lose their basic instinct for survival ?
Anti-Trump uprising in the UK
Many leftists took to the London streets Friday in response to Donald Trump's most recent visit to the UK. The UK virtue signalers were out in full force protesting the Donald Trump presidency. Many of these leftist UK citizens were out parroting their usual hate filled rants in strict accordance with their liberal propagandist cue cards.
Progressive Child Abuse in the Schools
It becomes dangerous when these indoctrinators start using propaganda as a means of engaging young and impressionable minds. Indoctrination eventually turns into brainwashing. "Teachers" who feel it is their duty to render students incapable of using any kind of logic, critical thought, or reason when forming an opinion inevitably cause irreparable damage to young minds. Many "educators" today sadly have become indoctrinators.
The New Religion of the Left: Selectivity
The left of today are the founders of a new religion called selectivity. Every aspect of the left's current extreme ideology involves being selective. Selective outrage, selective morality, selective media reporting, selective justice and selective "facts," all have become the "go to" weapons of the radical left. All of the above are becoming vital characteristics one must exemplify if one is going to become a practicing member of this new leftist religious cult.
Carly Fiorina educates leftist Katie Couric on ‘climate change’
In a most enlightening YouTube video (embedded below), the former Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina makes leftist "journalist" Katie Couric look like a fool regarding the climate change issue. While engaging Couric, Fiorina emphasizes the reality of American dependence upon oil and coal and how these energy sources are needed for the nation's basic self-survival. Fiorina explains that attempting to cut these energy sources off completely makes no logical sense.
Hey, NeverTrumps, Where Would We Be with Hillary Clinton Right Now?
Will the NeverTrumps ever come to the realization that President Trump is executing the conservative agenda most of them have been dreaming about for the past three decades? Finally, the answer to their prayers is here, yet many NeverTrumps like Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin continue to slam this administration. What will it actually take to get these nitpicking resisting NeverTrumps to taper down their sour-grapes anti-Trump rhetoric?
Terror group Al-Shabaab bans use of plastic bags in Somalia
The terror group Al-Shabaab apparently cares about our planet. They all of a sudden are going green in an attempt to save planet earth. It is becoming clear that Al-Shabaab, like their sympathizers on the left have suddenly gotten their priorities straight. Saving the earth from the evil of plastic bags certainly trumps cutting off people's heads and or blowing them up, don't you think?
Trump's burden: Cleaning up Obama's mess
President Trump is unraveling eight years of Obama tyranny. Here is a little reminder why so many people now stand shoulder to shoulder with President Trump. President Trump has chosen to unravel the last eight years of Obama's tyranny one day at a time. Trump is now reversing the negative Obama tide by simply implementing basic commonsense economic policies.
What don't people get about Trump being anti-establishment?
President Trump is anti-establishment; he is finally doing positive things for the country while tearing apart the vile plagues of globalism and leftist fascism. The USA is winning because Trump is ignoring the RINOs in his own party, the bloviating leftist academicians, the elite leftist technocrats and the vile "culture of death" ingrained within the mainstream media and Hollywood elite. We finally have a president who connects with the average man and who seems to have endless energy.
The Left drops the masks
The left has taken off its masks now for the whole country to see. They are the new party of hate who will use crisis – promulgating real crises and/or creating crisis -- in order to advance their vile agenda. They now exist to hate their own country, and many of these people now openly root for its very demise. The Left is willing to do anything to destroy President Trump. Leftists scorn his success, loathe his low unemployment numbers and despise his booming economy.
