Maximising your job search
That’s why, in this blog, we’re talking about maximising your job search. However, for highly skilled and niche contractors looking to secure their next post, it might not always seem that way. If you’re lucky to have various options for a new role, it’s still always worth improving your CV and online profile, to maximize your chances and choices. The following pointers are the easiest ways we see candidates improve their job-search experience and outcomes.
I spent the Jubilee weekend with a score of crazed West Country folk chasing cheese down a hill
I needed to settle my nerves, so I went for a pint in the Victoria Inn, Brockworth. It had what I was looking for: beer and a former champion. His name was Max McDougall and he was drinking with pals while considering whether to compete again in Gloucestershire’s spectacularly dangerous cheese rolling competition. It was taking place the following day, Sunday, after a two-year, pandemic-enforced hiatus.

John Sergeant on choosing to cruise
Not since I was a child have I longed so much to go on holiday, and for the chance to see, once more, the sun setting on a glittering sea. My last trip, to Barbados in winter 2019, was as a guest speaker on a Saga cruise. Southampton’s grey horizons soon gave way to the gentle blue skies of sub-tropical Madeira, which lies off the Portuguese mainland. As we sailed westward across the Atlantic, the days gradually got warmer, the menus changed, and we began to eat outside on deck.
My Gaza childhood – John Sergeant - The Oldie
Being neither Israeli nor Palestinian, I should not be so personally affected by the latest flare up in the Middle East. But all those bursts of war followed by periods of uneasy peace, have punctuated my life and stirred up some strong emotions. As a small child my family lived in one of the grander parts of Jerusalem. During the Second World War my father had been a vicar in Buckinghamshire, escaping shot and shell. Feelings of guilt drove him to Israel as a Christian missionary.
The Conspiracy to Kill Martin Luther King
For more than 21 years numerous official and unofficial investigations have attempted to answer the myriad questions surrounding the assassination of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Though a small-time escaped convict named James Earl Ray is serving a 99-year sentence for the killing, federal authorities conceded in 1979 that there probably was some kind of conspiracy. No coconspirator has ever been caught, however, and for ten years after the assassination none was even sought.
Is television ruining the future of our kids?
Whether or not there is any scientific basis upon which to base an answer to the above question doesn't matter; there is no doubt in my mind that humanity is getting dumber, and the human mind dimmer, all because of the amount of time people spend staring at screens. Don't get me wrong. The list of television shows that I personally watch—and continue to watch again and again—is huge.
Lord Kinnock: Corbyn must back Trident to avoid defeat
Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock has issued a stark warning to Jeremy Corbyn that if he continues to oppose the renewal of the Trident missile system, Labour will lose the next election. Lord Kinnock told me in an interview for BBC Radio 4's Analysis programme that to have any chance of winning, Mr Corbyn will have to stick with the present policy of multilateral nuclear disarmament.
