Header Design for Large Glass Doors
The header for a typical residential sliding or folding glass door is an example of a “deflection-critical” structural member that requires special design considerations over and above other common residential wood framing elements. If a sliding glass door is difficult to open, or inoperable, it may require a contractor to investigate and repair. Frustrating for a homeowner, the same issue may emerge again within a couple of years of repair if the repairs don’t address the root cause.
Grindflicks makes return at Bomb Shelter
Film, like any artistic medium, varies wildly in quality. But even though a movie might not be good in the conventional sense, that doesn’t mean it can’t be entertaining. These movies circle right back around to being “so bad, they’re good.” If there is anyone out there who has a passion for these gems of cinematic garbage, it is Randal Black. After a long hiatus, he is bringing back his brainchild, Grindflicks, to introduce a new audience to these trashy treasures.
Cognitive assessment in primary care almost never happens
In my primary care practice, few moments carry as much quiet weight as when an older patient leans in and says, “Doctor, I’m worried about my memory.” That moment is increasingly common, given that an estimated 42 percent of adults who reach age 55 will develop dementia in their lifetime, so nearly every family will face a version of it. It takes courage to say those words out loud, but our health care system too often dismisses memory issues as a normal part of aging, when it doesn’t have to be.
Still strange after all this time: Tech N9ne’s ‘Strange Wid It’ tour
Music | By John Showalter As hip-hop started to make its way into the national spotlight in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was largely split into two camps, “East Coast” and “West Coast”. Not content to be left out of a burgeoning new musical genre, the other parts of the country began to join in. It is against this backdrop that Aaron Dontez Yates, better known by his stage name Tech N9ne, made a name for himself.
Battle of the Hamm’s 2026: contenders face off against one Boldmember
Music | By John Showalter It’s that time of year again. The long-running battle of the bands at The Aquarium, Battle of the Hamm’s, is entering its twentieth year, and nine local bands will be facing off against last year’s champs, Boldmember. The price of entry for each contestant is a 30-pack of cold, refreshing Hamm’s beer (from the land of sky blue waters!) and the winner takes all the booze and the title belt. What bands are playing this year and which ones are making their debut?

‘River Adventures’ at Theatre B: a fun night for the family
Theatre | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Photo by Yvonne Denault There is something intimate and personal about plays. Even in our age of multimillion dollar Hollywood productions and droves of streaming services, watching actors on stage can be enthralling in a way the former can’t quite achieve. Since 2003, Moorhead’s Theatre B has been bringing a combination of both award-winning plays and new works to the stage for Fargo-Moorhead residents to enjoy.
A picture is worth a thousand words: Fargo author’s novella adapted into graphic novel
Writer's Block | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Almost six years ago, I interviewed local author Darrin Albert, pseudonym Blake Alb, about his debut novella “Snowcrow”, a book that explored the sinister side of snowmen. Now, as the weather grows colder and the days grow shorter, the saga of “Snowcrow” has entered a new chapter, crossing into the visual medium. Over the last three years, “Snowcrow” has been adapted into a graphic novel.
Back to musical roots at Red River Roots
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Bluegrass is a genre of music that is often associated with the American South. Many people would express incredulity at being told there is a thriving bluegrass and folk music community in the Upper Midwest. That is one misconception that Aaron Niehaus, among others, seeks to dispel with Red River Roots, a music festival occurring in September at Crooked Lane Farm.

A picture is worth a thousand books
Arts | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Everyone has heard the adage, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” However, it is safe to say there are far more than a thousand in Mickey Smith’s photographs. When one hears about photography exhibitions, one often thinks of subject matter ranging from architecture to nature to people. In Smith’s case, she has spent years chronicling the changing landscape of libraries and their contents.
Zero Place: One Band, Two Albums
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Local band Zero Place has been making quite a name for itself locally and regionally in the last few years. Despite getting its start during a time it seemed the whole world was coming to a stop with the COVID pandemic, the band shows no sign of slowing down with the release of their second album, “Darko,” on the horizon. That should be no surprise, though. Lead vocalist and guitarist Zander Ness is no stranger to making music.
Radio Free Fargo: Flying Free on Fargo’s Airwaves for 20 Years
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Like any metropolitan area, Fargo-Moorhead has a plethora of radio stations representing a variety of musical genres and other content. And like any other playing field in the world of media, there are going to be both the bigger fish (the corporate stations) and the hidden gems.
Rising from the ‘Ashes’
Music | Lamb of God celebrates 20th anniversary of a seminal album by John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Photo by Travis Shinn When the band Burn the Priest formed in 1994, they likely did not realize the impact that they would have on the metal genre. Thirty years later, the band is still going strong, albeit with a few changes in lineup and their adoption of the much better-known moniker Lamb of God.
We all scream for ‘We Watch Shudder’
Cinema | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com It’s that time of year again: October, the so-called “Spooky Season” where people partake in everything macabre. From costume parties to scary movie marathons, folks can’t get enough chills leading up to Halloween. However, for one locally hosted podcast, the spirit of Halloween is a year-long affair. “We Watch Shudder” is the passion project of JD Provorse and Michelle Roller.
Pour one out for Harold’s fifth anniversary
Music | By John Showalter In the several years since its owners purchased what was once Main Avenue Auto in Moorhead, Minnesota in 2019, Harold’s on Main has quickly transformed from the new kid on the block to a Moorhead fixture. Not even a pandemic that seemed to put the world on pause was able to drive them off the rails. What started as just a bar now regularly hosts outside concerts, vinyl nights, and karaoke, among other events.
Hamming It Up at the Aquarium
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Musicians in the Fargo-Moorhead area are often supportive of each other. They will attend each other’s shows, collaborate on projects, play as openers for each other, so on and so forth. However, there is nothing wrong with a bit of friendly competition — and that is why we have Battle of the Hamm’s.

STILL, After All This Time
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com It is not unheard of for bands to go on hiatus. However, as the old saying goes, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” That is why when a local group like STILL comes back to perform it is always cause for excitement.

Hydroponics Putting Down Its Roots in Moorhead
Culture | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com photo by Logan Macrae Anyone who lives in the Fargo-Moorhead area knows that its yearly weather is a sequence of extremes. It feels like more often than not, springs and autumns are barely there while summers drag on with oppressive heat and stifling humidity and winters with bitter cold and copious amounts of snow. The ideal window for those with green thumbs to tend their gardens can be very small indeed.
40 Years of Being Peculiar: The Melvins
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com The Melvins formed in 1983 Montesano, Washington, founded by singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne. The group is known for its heavy sound mixed with a dose of punk, forming its own subgenre. In those 40 years, they’ve released 30+ original albums, including live full lengths and countless singles. They've collaborated with Jello Biafra, Mudhoney, and Fantômas for individual releases and toured the world more times than Burgum has gift cards.

Phobophilic Goes Transatlantic
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com photo by Andy Wilcox Many of Fargo-Moorhead’s talented bands and musicians have been able to gain fans around the country. Some of this, of course, is due to social media making it easier than ever to put one’s art out into the world, but the rest is good, old-fashioned touring. Local favorites have hit the road and performed from sea to shining sea. And now, Phobophilic is planning to go international and play across the proverbial pond.
Mauled and Abandoned
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Sick riffs, extreme vocals, chaotic energy: all these and more are among the reasons that people listen to metal in all of its countless subgenres. The Fargo-Moorhead area has no shortage of both fans and talent when it comes to banging one’s head. The band Maul has been making waves in this pool of talent for the last several years and shows no sign of slowing down.

A Musical Journey From Baltic to Boardwalk
Music | January 20th, 2022 By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com Over the five years that I have written for High Plains Reader, I have made no secret of the fact that I think that Fargo-Moorhead has its fair share of artistic talent, musical and otherwise. Surprisingly, in all that time I had never gotten around to writing about a mainstay of Fargo music that has been around for over a decade, Baltic to Boardwalk.

There’s something newer, quicker, and sleeker every year, every month, every week. But even in this society where smartphones are ubiquitous and virtually everyone has a camera in their pocket, there are still people who hearken back to the analog methods. Kary Janousek is one of those people.

A Colorful Look at Baroness
Music | By John Showalter john.d.showalter@gmail.com To say that John Dyer Baizley is a creative individual would be an understatement. Not only is he the vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the critically acclaimed and hard-to-pigeonhole band Baroness, he is the painter of their equally striking album art (and on occasion, the album art of other bands). November 14th marks their first performance in Fargo since 2009.
