Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles has announced she’s stepping down next month, less than halfway through her fifth term in office. Now, a new era of Charlotte politics is on the horizon. For the first time in a decade, Charlotte voters will elect a brand-new mayor next year. Lyles said in her statement that leaving early gives voters “more time to learn about their candidates.” That’s an understatement, since candidate filing for the 2027 municipal elections isn’t until next July.

State Appeals Court rules on challenge to NC Confederate soldier monument Original

The Confederate soldier towering over the Gaston County courthouse will remain at his post, despite the NAACP saying it violates Black people’s state constitutional rights. A three-judge panel of the North Carolina Court of Appeals rejected the civil rights organization’s argument that the rebel soldier holding his rifle atop a 30-foot obelisk, deprived people of their rights.

Hundreds of elementary school students did their best to sit still and stay pin-drop silent as first-grade teacher Stephanie Lane made her way into the lunchroom Thursday. Too much noise, and they might give away the surprise. As Lane entered, they erupted in tiny cheers, jumping out of their seats. At the front of the room stood Lane’s husband, daughter, parents and aunt, alongside her school principal, Michelle Holland.
