Storms leave trail of damage across Indiana

Violent storms rolled in waves across Indiana on Wednesday. Rain and wind swept over the Hoosier State beginning in the early afternoon, peppering some communities with pea-sized hail, as more intense storms churned late into the night. "We have three teams out in the field assessing damage," said Crystal Pettet with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, adding it could take time before meteorologists confirm where tornadoes may have touched down in Indiana.

Damaging wind and hail could be headed your way in central Indiana over the next 24 hours. On Tuesday, meteorologists predicted severe weather would hit the Indianapolis area as soon as 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, and last until 2 a.m. Forecasters with the National Weather Service warned tornadoes are possible with the storms. IndyStar staff will be monitoring the storm system predicted to barrel through the Midwest. Check back throughout the day for more updates.

Indiana at risk for 80 mph winds, large hail and tornadoes Wednesday

Indianapolis is under an increased risk of severe weather that could produce strong tornadoes Wednesday, as well as "very large hail," localized flooding and damaging straight line wind gusts in excess of 80 mph. The worst of the storms, according to the National Weather Service, are expected to slam into the Midwest beginning Wednesday afternoon June 17 into early Thursday morning.
