My Turn: Move your money Original
April is Move Your Money Month, but any month is a good time to look at where our money goes. Our economic choices matter, and we can choose those that have more positive local returns. When dollars circulate locally, they support local jobs, local businesses, and the community as a whole. Thinking locally starts with where you bank, continues with where you shop, and extends to how you invest. Where you keep your money, how you spend it, and where you invest it all matter.

This year marks my 25th anniversary with the Franklin County Community Development Corporation (FCCDC), and as I look back, I’m struck by how much we’ve accomplished together, and by how much our work continues to matter. Economic development is rarely a quick process. It’s slow, steady, and often invisible in the moment. But over time, small steps build momentum, and partnerships become progress.

Big Issue North's Digital Inclusion Appeal INCLUDE

Adopting more online shopping? Utilising digital banking and contactless payments? 85% of payments are now made digitally, meaning that Big Issue North vendors are a part of 4.7 million adults in the UK who are currently ‘digitally excluded’ and unable to use technology required to go cashless.

Why Irish soldiers who fought Hitler hide their medals
Image caption John Stout: "I feel very betrayed about how we were treated, it was wrong" Five thousand Irish soldiers who swapped uniforms to fight for the British against Hitler went on to suffer years of persecution. One of them, 92-year-old Phil Farrington, took part in the D-Day landings and helped liberate the German death camp at Bergen-Belsen - but he wears his medals in secret.

The Recorder - My Turn: Working together is the way to build economic equality
Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of seven op-ed essays written by authors with local ties that will explore why inequalities in income, wealth and opportunity are bad for Franklin County and what the community can do about it. As Chuck Collins pointed out in his recent My Turn article, economic inequality has been increasing in the U.S. to such an extent that CEOs of major national firms receive over 300 times more than typical workers in their companies.

Pay Attention to What You are Missing on Mother’s Day?
Sitting at the dinner table yesterday for a family celebration it reminded me how important it is for Mother’s to hear. My mother was always saying, “What?”, because it was hard to hear in the very loud, reverberant room. My 1 ½ year old grandson kept sneaking out of the dining room, walking around, and getting into mischief. His mother quickly went to the kitchen to hear what he dropped and why he was crying.
