It Ain’t Funny: Or, Why We Don’t Laugh Together
Rereading Reinhold Niebuhr’s essay “Humor and Faith” reminds me that humor is the exclusive domain of human beings. While my dog demonstrates noticeable “joy” when I take her to my office off leash, and while she is often amusing to me, I never mistake her behaviors for human humor. Humor is one way humans process reality, particularly incongruities in reality. That’s what humor is. We laugh, chuckle, or outright guffaw when we detect things that don’t square in our experience.
Nuclear energy bias has potential to harm New Mexico's economic future
Since 2012 a dedicated group of elected officials, business leaders and influential community members have been involved in a major economic development project that we believe is important to both Eddy and Lea Counties. Our vision led to the partnership of the Eddy Lea Energy Alliance (ELEA) and Holtec International to propose the HI-STORE Consolidated Interim Storage Facility (CISF) for spent nuclear fuel (SNF).
Bias against nuclear energy could hurt N.M.

A note on taking NMSU Carlsbad independent
By now, many of you may have heard mention of a local effort to separate Carlsbad’s community college from its complete affiliation with New Mexico State University and instead operate as an independent college. Independence was the recommendation of a task force on higher education after several months of investigation. Education is the great equalizer and therefore, the single most important function we do as a community to provide opportunities for our children and our adult citizens.
Letter to the Editor: In support of WIPP during this pandemic
A Nov. 24, 2020, article about the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant cited the recent rise in COVID-19 cases at the site as one of the reasons why the State of New Mexico Environment Department has denied a second temporary authorization for a new utility shaft at the facility. We would like to inform the public that we have met extensively with the Department of Energy and its contractors on this issue.
Nuclear storage and oil do mix
We want to take this opportunity to thank the many New Mexicans who have expressed their support during the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) tele-townhall meetings for the Holtec HI-STORE Consolidated Interim Storage Facility (CIS) project in Lea County. The Eddy Lea Energy Alliance (ELEA) and Holtec International continue to work diligently to bring this facility to fruition.

Letter to the editor: Reopening during COVID-19 poses moral dilemma
OPINION John Heaton Published 12:13 p.m. MT May 15, 2020 Many states are ending their social distancing orders, so what practices should you continue to use as you return to everyday life? Wochit The debate over opening the economy versus the risk of exacerbating the contagion that would result in more deaths, is and has been a real moral dilemma for all thinking Americans.
WIPP is the crown jewel to accomplish clean-up
John Heaton, Chair of the Carlsbad Nuclear Task Force Published 10:56 a.m. MT Feb. 11, 2019 A brief history of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Wochit The recent New Mexico Environment Dept. approval of a WIPP permit modification to change how it counts the WIPP Volume of Record has become somewhat of a political football for anti-nuclear organizations and politicians that oppose WIPP, Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories.
Are you creating data assets or a data dump?
John Heaton, Moneycatcha: our appetite to store more data is becoming insatiable In 2011, analyst firm IDC predicted that by 2020 overall data would grow by 50 times but the IT professionals available to manage that data would only increase by 1.5 times. Fast forward to 2017 and the total enterprise storage systems were up 14% reaching $18 billion (£10 billion) in Q3 2017, according to IDC. Our appetite to store more data is becoming insatiable.
How to turn bad data into a new revenue stream
John Heaton, Moneycatcha: turning bad data into a new revenue stream With the vast amounts of data companies gather and store, it can be challenging to figure out what’s actually of value. How can we use data more effectively? How can we assess and increase the economic value of data, and get additional revenue from it? The cost of data redundancy will be $3.3 trillion in 2020. And 21% of businesses will experience reputational damage as a result of redundant data.
There’s Simply No Excuse for Being Bored on a Trip
FROM time to time, I hear business travelers complain about how unexciting their trips are. This is nonsense, for the most part. Business travel can be great adventure if you’re curious. Maybe I inherited my inquisitiveness. My ancestors’ tall ships plied the waters between Connecticut and Shanghai in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Each trip was a perilous and hopeful journey for commerce, and according to them, there was always something interesting along the way.
City misinformed in stand against nuclear storage
Even though I was very disappointed with the outcome of the Las Cruces Council meeting, I want to thank the Las Cruces City Council for allowing me to make a brief presentation on the Consolidated Interim Storage Facility between Carlsbad and Hobbs and respond to their questions. I know the mayor’s job is a very busy one, and he can’t be an expert on everything, but it was shocking when he said this project provides nothing for Las Cruces and he is opposing it.
How blockchain can fix business pain points
Blockchain is a highly technical concept that has been much hyped, without full understanding of what it can and can’t do. The reality is that for certain use cases, blockchain can be a brilliant useful and effective technology. For others it’s not appropriate, and trying to use it for the wrong reasons will just make an existing problem worse. Blockchain isn’t a replacement for bad systems.
Many owed thanks for Brine Well bill success
Thank you Carlsbad, the Brine Well Authority, our Legislative delegation, the City of Carlsbad, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, the Carlsbad Department of Development and Eddy County. You have achieved a major accomplishment by putting together the projected money necessary to fix our potentially disastrous collapse of the Brine Well at the South Y.
Reclamation funds are meant to aid brine well remediation
Mr. Aubrey Dunn, who commented on the legislative effort to direct the use of money in the Oil and Gas Reclamation Fund in support of fixing the Carlsbad Brine Well, is obviously uninformed about the comprehensive mandate for the use of the reclamation fund. Two proposed bills seek to use funds from the Oil and Gas Reclamation Fund to help fix the brine well cavity in Carlsbad, which is located beneath the town’s busiest intersection and in danger of collapsing.
Brine Well Advisory Authority update
Dale Janway, Mayor of the City of Carlsbad, Stella Davis, Eddy County Commissioner, John Heaton, Chairman of the Brine Well Advisory Authority Published 1:00 a.m. MT Aug. 29, 2017 Carlsbad Brine Well Authority designee John Heaton addresses the Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Legislative Committee Friday in Carlsbad.
Facts on downblended plutonium disposal at WIPP
Former Governor Richardson’s recent Op-Ed piece has many factual errors and politically inspired innuendoes that are simply not true. It is difficult to understand why he was using the erroneous information from the report contracted for by CB&I-Areva who is the contractor trying to save the MOX project and their pocket book. He claims the plutonium coming to WIPP would be High Level Waste and “weapons grade.” Not true! What was once weapons grade is converted to a non-reactive oxide.
Nuclear disposal plan an idea that’s past its time
Several of our nation’s political leaders involved in the 2000 Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement (PMDA) with Russia have publicly spoken out in favor of continuing with the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility. While these political leaders understandably have a vested interest in the continuation of their treaty, the Carlsbad Mayor’s Nuclear Task Force strongly encourages them to rethink their stated opinions.
John William Heaton - Watauga Democrat: Obits
Born August 14, 1937, in Banner Elk, he was a son of John and Faye Jones Heaton. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Dr. Heaton was the Acquisitions Librarian at Appalachian State University from 1969, until his retirement in 1997. He was a long standing member the education fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa, serving as an officer on both the state and national level, and was a charter member of the Boone Kiwanis Club. John was always interested in genealogy.
Down-blending is best for excess plutonium
Several of our nation’s political leaders involved in the 2000 Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement (PMDA) agreement with Russia, including Senator Richard Lugar and Governor Bill Richardson, have publicly spoken out in favor of continuing with the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility.
Boat Travel -- National Geographic Traveler
I pay the fare—about 50 cents—to the lady behind the window counter, pass through a creaky metal turnstile, step carefully along a wooden plank swaying in time with the lapping waves below, and board a ferryboat in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.
