Hovis launching "reduced carbs" bread range

UK bread maker Hovis is launching a range of loaves containing fewer carbohydrates. The new Hovis Lower Carb range is targeted to meet "consumer needs for a healthier and more balanced lifestyle". Deal to give US dairy exporters "increased access" to China

US dairy chiefs have welcomed the signing of an agreement between Washington and Beijing to boost access for dairy exporters to the Chinese market. The US Dairy Export Council (USDEC) said the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and China's government yesterday (15 June) "will increase access to China for more than 200 US dairy exporters in the short-term and paves the way for additional US entrants in the future".

Portugal is considering introducing a tax on foods containing high levels of fat and salt, in addition to raising an existing tax on sugary drinks, the country's health minister has said. Adalberto Campos Fernandes said in an interview with Portugal's Lusa news agency the move is under consideration by the government. French dairy group Danone today (9 June) announced plans to invest in sustainable agriculture in the Latin America and Caribbean region in partnership with international finance organisations. Danone said the group, together with its Danone Ecosystem Fund, is teaming up with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Livelihoods Funds "to develop disruptive business solutions that boost economic growth" in the region.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has teamed up with Chinese firms including e-commerce giant Alibaba in a move to promote sustainable seafood procurement. The MSC said today (9 June) it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Alibaba's Tmall platform that will "prioritise purchasing seafood from sustainable sources". "Tmall also committed to a target of 20% of seafood products sold with the MSC ecolabel by 2020," the MSC said.
