Hovis launching "reduced carbs" bread range
UK bread maker Hovis is launching a range of loaves containing fewer carbohydrates. The new Hovis Lower Carb range is targeted to meet "consumer needs for a healthier and more balanced lifestyle". Hovis said the new loaves contain 30% less carbs per 100g compared to other sliced white, wholemeal or seeded bread on the market, "which typically contain 45.8g for white, 39.1g for wholemeal and 38.9g for seeded".
Deal to give US dairy exporters "increased access" to China
US dairy chiefs have welcomed the signing of an agreement between Washington and Beijing to boost access for dairy exporters to the Chinese market. The US Dairy Export Council (USDEC) said the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and China's government yesterday (15 June) "will increase access to China for more than 200 US dairy exporters in the short-term and paves the way for additional US entrants in the future".

Fairtrade sales up 11% in Italy in 2016
The retail value of Fairtrade-certified products sold in Italy last year amounted to EUR110.2m (US$123.3m) - an increase of 11% over the previous year, according to latest figures. Portugal 'considering junk food tax'
Portugal is considering introducing a tax on foods containing high levels of fat and salt, in addition to raising an existing tax on sugary drinks, the country's health minister has said. Adalberto Campos Fernandes said in an interview with Portugal's Lusa news agency the move is under consideration by the government. A tax on junk food, "similar to the one applying to sugary drinks, will be a priority target", Campos Fernandes said.

UK bacon manufacturer Denhay Farms is rolling out a new line of "raised without antibiotics" bacon under its Spoiltpig brand in partnership with Scottish pig farmer Brydock Farms. Denhay, based in Honiton, Devon, said all pigs at Brydock Farms in the Scottish Highlands are now outdoor bred and raised without the use of antibiotics from birth.

Australia's Nature One Dairy to produce infant formula for China's Sinopharm
Australia's Nature One Dairy has signed a partnership agreement to manufacture infant formula for export to the China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation - Sinopharm. Under the terms of the deal, Melbourne-based Nature One said it will produce an "all-Australian made infant milk formula brand in its Australian manufacturing facility" for Sinopharm in China.
Food firms studying draft EU law to reduce acrylamide
Food manufacturers are considering a proposed EU law to introduce mandatory measures aimed at reducing acrylamide in food products. A spokesperson for FoodDrinkEurope, the organisation representing food manufacturers operating in the EU, told just-food today (12 June) it was studying the draft law, published by the European Commission, which would force manufacturers to comply with "benchmark" measures to reduce acrylamide in foods.
Paulig launches LatAm-inspired Santa Maria range in UK
Finland's Paulig Group today (12 June) rolled out a range of 39 individual "mix and match" Latin American-inspired products under its Santa Maria brand in the UK. Paulig said the Latin American Kitchen range aims to "tap into demand for convenient meal solutions". The line-up includes ten cook-in sauces, five flavoured rice variants, seven dry seasoning mixes, six tortillas and wraps and 11 toppings and sides "to personalise any of the dishes.

PepsiCo launches "India-made" Doritos
PepsiCo's has starting to make Doritos nacho chips brand in India using "locally-sourced ingredients". The company said it has set up a new production line for Doritos in two "made-in-India" existing flavours - Nacho Cheese and Sweet Chilli - at its snacks manufacturing facility in Kolkata, West Bengal. PepsiCo said its India business "will be procuring corn, the main ingredient in producing Doritos, entirely from India".

MSC, Alibaba team up on 2020 seafood sourcing targets
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has teamed up with Chinese firms including e-commerce giant Alibaba in a move to promote sustainable seafood procurement. The MSC said today (9 June) it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Alibaba's Tmall platform that will "prioritise purchasing seafood from sustainable sources". "Tmall also committed to a target of 20% of seafood products sold with the MSC ecolabel by 2020," the MSC said.

Danone invests in sustainable agriculture in LatAm
French dairy group Danone today (9 June) announced plans to invest in sustainable agriculture in the Latin America and Caribbean region in partnership with international finance organisations. Danone said the group, together with its Danone Ecosystem Fund, is teaming up with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Livelihoods Funds "to develop disruptive business solutions that boost economic growth" in the region.

Agrokor secures loan to "sustain" business during restructure
Embattled Croatian food manufacturer and retailer Agrokor has secured a loan of EUR480m (US$536m) to "sustain" business operations amid a restructuring of the group. Grupo Lala to invest in new Guatemalan milk plant
Mexican dairy group Grupo Lala is investing more than US$30m in the construction of a new dairy processing plant in neighbouring Guatemala. Lala chairman Eduardo Tricio Haro said the new facility will process milk, ice cream and other dairy products and create "around 3,000 jobs both direct and indirect".
JBS 'rules out sale' of majority stake in Pilgrim's Pride
Brazil-based meat giant JBS has reportedly said its majority stake in US poultry arm Pilgrim's Pride is not for sale. According to Reuters, the company ruled out selling Pilgrim's shortly after it announced the sale of its beef operations in three South American markets to companies controlled by local rival Minerva.

Australia-based food group Goodman Fielder today (8 June) announced proposals for a shake-up of its operations in New Zealand, including the closure of two bakery sites and investment in other facilities. The proposals come five months after Goodman Fielder, which is owned by Singapore agri-food giant Wilmar International, said changes to its baking business across Australia were expected to lead to more than 200 redundancies.

Brioche Pasquier 'issues cage-free eggs pledge'
French bakery group Brioche Pasquier has committed to ending the use of eggs from caged hens in France and at its operations in other countries by 2025, according to French animal welfare campaigners. The campaign group L214, which works to expose illegal practices and promote ethics in the treatment of animals for food production, said yesterday (7 June) Brioche Paquier gave the commitment "following discussions with the group".
UK's Waitrose halts JBS corned beef sales over 'slave labour' claims
Packs of sliced corned beef "sourced" from Brazil-based JBS have been removed from the shelves of UK retailer Waitrose, after a national newspaper linked the meat giant with alleged slave labour on cattle farms. The move came after The Guardian newspaper claimed it had obtained documents showing JBS, had previously purchased cattle from a farm under federal investigation in Brazil's northern state of Pará.
