Introduction. Nerve transfers
Nerve transfer, introduced more than a century ago, has been rapidly gaining in popularity over the past 2 decades. This rewiring technique redirects expendable working nerves, nerve branches, or fascicles to nonfunctioning, more important nerve targets. Because of its benefits (early recovery and excellent outcomes), nerve transfer has become not only a viable option as part of a surgeon’s armamentarium, but also the preferred technique to reconstruct nerve deficits.

Among the many photographs I've amassed over the years, I obtained a prized picture of the gravestone of David White, my grandfather eight generations removed. He and other family members began arriving in North Carolina around 1750, settling into new and difficult lives as residents of the British royal colony. By 1770, North Carolina had an estimated population of just fewer than 200,000 residents, but the settlers had begun to shift from British citizens to the earliest American citizens.

There was, to say the least, a lot of HB 2 news this week—and a lot of reader reaction, too. (See our recap in Triangulator). Responding to the Department of Justice's demand that the state not enforce HB 2's bathroom provision, commenter chappa hillian (get it?) writes: "Finally, this law is called out for what it is. McCrory and the legislature now find themselves battling the Justice Department over civil rights.
Vegan BBQ & Scientific Beer: The Week's Best Food Events
Presented by Durham's Parks & Recreation Department, the smart little series Botany Bar Crawl aims to explore the science of sipping craft beverages from the city's new glut of beer makers, cider makers, and distillers. For this ticketed edition on May 15, erudite imbibers head to Fullsteam, the "plow-to-pint" brewery that sourced forty percent of its beer's ingredients last year within a three-hundred-mile radius of its Rigsbee Avenue headquarters.

Coffee, Mexican Brunch, and Mother's Day: The Triangle's Best Food Events
In late April, Weekend—the aptly named, seasonal coffee shop that the cold-brew magnates of Slingshot run from their downtown Raleigh headquarters—announced it wouldn't open this year. Jenny and Jonathan Bonchak have continued to ramp up production for their bottled-and-boxed goods, meaning that weekends of pour-overs and fresh pastries no longer seemed sustainable. Still, Weekend won't be entirely silent this year.

An Urgent Question
Let's begin, as we always seem to these days, with House Bill 2: "Dear Governor McCrory," writes Ed Levin of Chapel Hill, "you got me thinking about bathrooms [Soapboxer, April 27]. Admittedly, I have thought about them in the past, often with some sense of urgency. Well, this is urgent, too. Specifically, bringing bathrooms to mind today is what is known as House Bill 2. I am a little uncertain about how this works.

We Talk to Henry Rollins About His Anti-HB 2 piece in LA Weekly, He Reads Our Minds
"North Carolina, I love you," Henry Rollins titled his latestcolumn, "but your governor is an asshole."If you haven't read it, go do so right now . In his own foul-mouthed, egalitarian way, Rollins simultaneously condemns Governor Pat McCrory and the legislators behind HB 2 and defends the people of the state.

Cancelation Notice
Another week, another batch of House Bill 2 stories, most of them about this or that event canceling in protest. David McKnight writes that these cancelations are counterproductive: "This would be a good time to survey the overall political terrain on the question of how liberal-minded people in North Carolina are treated by supposedly liberal interest groups at the national level.

At nearly $100 each, tickets for Standard Foods' latest extravaganza certainly aren't cheap, but with the imminent departure of cofounding chef Scott Crawford, this might be worth asking a favor of the piggy bank. What's more, this four-course meal, which starts in the garden outdoors before shifting back inside, features Sean Lilly Wilson of Durham's Fullsteam and Diane Flynt of the great Virginia cider maker Foggy Ridge. The meal starts at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 18.
To Pearl Jam, with (Old) Love
I didn't marry any of my high school girlfriends, and I don't listen to Pearl Jam much anymore, but damn if I don't owe a debt of awkward gratitude to both. I was like any teenager, falling hard for my first loves. Pearl Jam was my first and most severe band crush. I had it bad, too. Not only did I own every album and all the singles, but I had them memorized. I picked up the guitar so I could play along. Again, bad.

Duramite writes: "Of all places to use as a poster child, why Guglhupf?

Eleven Dems Voted for House Bill 2. We Called to Ask Why.
That's how long it took to ram through House Bill 2, the most extreme anti-LGBT legislation in the entire country, from the first House committee meeting being gaveled to order last Wednesday morning to Governor McCrory's signature that night. That's how long it took the legislature's Republicans to roll back decades of civil rights progress and make us a national laughingstock.

As terrible a law as House Bill 2 is, it sure does drive web traffic—and tons and tons of comments. (Uh, thanks, Pat?) This is well-founded law, meaning discrimination 'based on sex' has long been found to protect transgender people.

The Real Racists
On our blog last Thursday, INDY staff writer Danny Hooley reported on a Daily Caller hit on a Durham Central Park School teacher who taught first graders about the Black Lives Matter movement. Not surprisingly, perhaps, this story engendered some comments-section outrage. "The fact is this," writes Eugene D. "Six-year-old children were forced to participate in a Black Lives Matter march against the will of some of the parents, who weren't even asked for consent.
A Bouncer's Zen: How Hank Williams Likes to Keep the Bar's Door Calm
The first time Hank Williams kicked someone out of the club, the club happened to be his house. A decade ago, Williams hosted punk and metal shows at The Thrashitorium, a squat little ranch house he rented on Wake Forest Road. Before one concert, while the opening band was away eating dinner, a kid got behind the drums and started causing chaos. He refused to stop until the band member who had stuck around started pounding him from above.
