Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote a review of the abysmal Stressed Eric cartoon for a lovely magazine called Cult TV.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Danny Concannon.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google Docs, a PC, and many godforsaken CMSs.

What's your favorite social network?

All social networks are awful, but Twiter has its claws in me.

Who do you wish followed you?

Rats.

Why did you become a journalist?

I combined my passion for writing with my interest in gaming, and PC Gamer published it.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was comedy editor at my university newspaper. I interviewed comedians, and reviewed live gigs. I also interviewed Douglas Adams!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I think my interview with the Stanley Parable creators, or pieces on anxiety disorder.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Never ever work for free. You devalue everyone's work to zero, and make it worse for everyone in the industry.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Weekdays, between 9 and 1. Because after that, all is lost.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Honestly, I do most of the pitching. Very little comes my way.

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Pulling my child off a roof.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Private Eye.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

The idea that I have any nefarious goals. I only wish to communicate truth.
