As Georgia hosts Alabama on Saturday night in the SEC headliner, it jars my memory of my first experience covering a college football game for the Dothan Eagle. And it wasn’t from a press box view at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., but instead from the upper deck. The date was Sept. 3, 1985, which was a Labor Day night – the season opener for both the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs. But before we get to the game, let me backtrack a bit.

REHOBETH – A patchwork offense worked out just fine for Rehobeth during a 28-16 home win over Cottonwood on Thursday night. With two quarterbacks sidelined – Grant Golson was recently hurt and Ty Lewis was injured in the season opener – the Rebels utilized a variety of players behind center and took advantage of strong play from the offensive line to lead 22-0 before the Bears scored two late touchdowns after a lightning-delayed fourth quarter.
