‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Sees James Cameron Rewriting Performance Capture, VFX Supervisor Says
Joe Letteri remembers the day, almost exactly 20 years ago, when he first glimpsed the wondrous world of “Avatar.” Letteri, the pioneering senior visual-effects supervisor at Wētā FX in New Zealand, was in the final days of postproduction on Peter Jackson’s ‘King Kong’ when he received a call from producer Jon Landau. “He wanted to know if I had time to read a treatment by Jim Cameron for a new film,” Letteri said of the late producer. “Of course, I made the time and it was so enthralling.
Top 200 Collector Jon Landau Was Greatly Inspired by the Met’s “Siena” Exhibition
For my wife, Barbara, and me, the best exhibition we saw in the past year was the one that most relates to our collecting interests: “Siena: The Rise of Painting, 1300–1350,” which debuted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York before traveling to the National Gallery in London. We saw it in New York this past fall, where, under the direction of Stephan Wolohojian, the Met’s chief curator of European painting, it was a masterpiece of museum presentation.
‘Titanic’ Producer Jon Landau Reveals How Close the Film Came to Disaster (Exclusive Excerpt) Original
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in 'Titanic' Courtesy Everett Collection The following is excerpted from THE BIGGER PICTURE by Jon Landau (Hyperion Avenue, out Nov. 4). As anyone who has seen Titanic knows, one of the stars of the movie is the ship. And, like with casting our leads, we had to get it right. We had historical images to go by, along with Jim [Cameron]’s vision and immense research, but from there, we actually had to figure out how to build the ship.

Review: Joni Mitchell Strikes a Delicate Balance on 'Court and Spark'
On first listening, Joni Mitchell‘s Court And Spark, the first truly great pop album of 1974, sounds surprisingly light; by the third or fourth listening, it reveals its underlying tensions. The lyrics lead us through concentric circles that define an almost Zen-like dilemma: The freer the writer becomes, the more unhappy she finds herself; the more she surrenders her freedom, the less willing she is to accept the resulting compromise.
Avatar: Collector's Edition - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Overview - Still the reigning global box office champion, Avatar: Collector’s Edition comes to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Offering up all three versions of the film via seamless branching, the visuals pick up a nice layer of refinement thanks to Dolby Vision HDR (you read that right!). Audio is solid for each respective version, and the set is loaded with all of the new and archival bonus features available. However, the packaging is a major pain in Pandora’s ass to access the discs safely.

Sing It Again Rod
Sing It Again Rod touches all the solo bases since Stewart’s departure from the Jeff Beck Band, wherein he cut his teeth on American audiences for $75 a week plus expenses, and wisely ignores his generally inferior work with the Faces. With only four solo albums to his credit, the retrospective is premature, even though it is pulled off with taste and imagination. Stewart’s music has passed through blues, rock ‘n’ roll, pop, rock, Dylan and British folk music.
Mind Games
Mind Games is, to my knowledge, the first release from the conceptual country Nutopia, whose existence John and Yoko proclaim in a Declaration on the lyric sheet. Oddly enough, it isn’t all that different from the records he has been making in America these last few years.
Mardi Gras
In the future, Mardi Gras may be known as Fogerty’s Revenge. After all the carping about his egotism, and after the published complaints from his co-workers about his hogging the show, he has done what I never thought he would: allowed his cohorts to expose themselves in public. Ceding six of the new album’s ten selections to drummer Doug Clifford and bassist Stu Cook may have been an invitation to artistic suicide for them, but it sure proves that John was right all along.
Review: Aretha Franklin's 'Aretha Now'
The new Aretha Franklin album, Aretha Now, to be released at the end of June shows America’s most important and popular singer walking a very thin line between progress and regression. The best things, although few in number, are among her best ever; the lesser items show that both she and the entire Atlantic staff are having trouble trying to keep the ball rolling. And even the good stuff doesn’t sustain itself over repeated listenings.
Producer Shares First Look at Sigourney Weaver on the Set of Avatar 2
Producer Shares First Look at Sigourney Weaver on the Set of Avatar 2 The COVID-19 outbreak forced 20th Century Fox to delay their scheduled filming for James Cameron’s Avatar sequels to a date yet to be confirmed. Yet, the company is still working hard to pump up the fans for the back-to-back sequels to the 2009’s blockbuster. Recently, producer Jon Landau took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes photo from the Site 26 Shack set.
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
Bob Dylan was the source of pop music’s unpredictability in the Sixties. Never as big a record-seller as commonly imagined, his importance was first aesthetic and social, and then as an influence. It was from that vantage point that he accumulated unprecedented power and authority, to the point where it must have eventually threatened his peace of mind.
Avatar Sequels Filming Postponed Due to Coronavirus Concerns
Avatar Sequels Filming Postponed Due to Coronavirus Concerns Another one bites the dust as a result of the coronavirus global emergency. The back-to-back sequels to James Cameron’s Avatar are forced to delay their scheduled filming to a date to be confirmed. The work should have started on Friday in New Zealand. Speaking with The New Zealand Herald, Avatar producer Jon Landau also revealed that production will move forward in Los Angeles for now. “We’ve delayed it,” Landau said.
Blood On The Tracks
Bob Dylan may be the Charlie Chaplin of rock & roll. Both men are regarded as geniuses by their entire audience. Both were proclaimed revolutionaries for their early work and subjected to exhaustive attack when later works were thought to be inferior. Both developed their art without so much as a nodding glance toward their peers. Both are multitalented: Chaplin as a director, actor, writer and musician; Dylan as a recording artist, singer, songwriter, prose writer and poet.

Scarlett Johansson’s Glamorous Style Always Rules the ‘Avengers’ Red Carpet
Scarlett Johansson wowed on the red carpet Tuesday night in Los Angeles at the world premiere of her film “Avengers: Infinity War.” Dressed in a sparkling silver metallic Erdem gown adorned with ornate silver beading and black Jimmy Choo Minny sandals, it seemed as if all eyes were on the Marvel action star. And unsurprisingly, when taking a look back at some of Scar-Jo’s past “Avengers” premiere looks, her style is just as glamorous as it is now.
‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Footage Revealed By Robert Rodriguez & Jon Landau At CinemaCon
James Cameron isn’t at CinemaCon this year, but his Avatar producer Jon Landau is filling in. When Landau asked the Oscar-winning director to come to Las Vegas, “He told me, ‘Jon, I think it’s a good decision for everyone in that room that I’m here directing the movies, and not in the room’.” Landau regaled the crowd today at 20th Century’s Fox’s presentation with how Cameron initially wrote the upcoming Alita: Battle Angel in 2000 to direct himself.

Case in point: Tech provider OrderDynamics — in collaboration with solutions company OSF Commerce — has revealed the “completed integration of out-of-the-box distributed order management technology (DOM) with order consolidation” for Browns Shoes. Their Satanic Majesties Request
The Rolling Stones have been the best of all possible worlds: they have the lack of pretension and sentimentality associated with the blues, the rawness and toughness of hard rock, and the depth which always makes you feel that they are in the midst of saying something. They have never impressed me as being kitsch. Their Satanic Majesties Request, despite moments of unquestionable brilliance, put the status of the Rolling Stones in jeopardy.
David Bowie Young Americans Album Review | Rolling Stone
The title song of David Bowie's Young Americans is one of his handful of classics, a bizarre mixture of social comment, run-on lyric style, English pop and American soul. The band plays great and Tony Visconti's production is flawless — just a touch of old-fashioned slap-back echo to give the tracks some added mystery. The rest of the album works best when Bowie combines his renewed interest in soul with his knowledge of English pop, rather than opting entirely for one or the other.
Martin E. Brooks of 'Six Million Dollar Man' dies at 90
Jon Landau, a film producer and friend of Brooks, said he died of natural causes after a brief hospitalization in Los Angeles. Brooks and Landau's mother, Edie Landau, were childhood friends who became close companions two decades ago, after she was widowed. Brooks' best-known role was as scientist Dr. Rudy Wells on the 1970s series "The Six Million Dollar Man" and its spinoff, "The Bionic Woman." The role of Wells had previously been played in the original series by Alan Oppenheimer.
Creating the Music of the Na’vi in James Cameron’s Avatar: An Ethnomusicologist’s Role
On January 25, 2010, James Cameron's Avatar became the highest grossing film in history. I was privileged to be part of Avatar's creative team as ethnomusicology consultant to film composer James Horner. In Global Soundtracks, Mark Slobin states that the job of a film composer is "to construct an integrated and logical society, music and all" (2008:4). In this case, Horner and I constructed the musical culture for the imaginary Na'vi of Pandora.
Cowboys Eat Pudding at the Oscars
Civil Liberties Ang Lee's Wyoming weepie meets the culture war | In theory, five movies will be competing for the Best Picture prize when the Oscars are awarded this Sunday. In practice, there are two candidates, Brokeback Mountain and everything else. In the world concocted by the movie's publicists—both paid and volunteer—the future of gay rights rests on Brokeback's ability to win Academy Awards; a victory for anything else would be a victory for the forces of reaction.
Bruce Springsteen – Tunnel of Love
[Verse 1] Fat man sitting on a little stool Takes the money from my hand while his eyes take a walk all over you Hands me two tickets, smiles and whispers good luck Well, cuddle up, angel, cuddle up, my little dove And we'll ride down, baby, into this tunnel of love [Verse 2] I can feel the soft silk of your blouse And them soft thrills in our little fun house Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us You, me and all that stuff we're so scared of Gotta ride down, baby, into this...
Dylan the Mythmaker Makes It Real
The Rolling Thunder Revue has come and gone on the East Coast, leaving in its wake an aura of good feeling and anticipation over what Bob Dylan and Co. will do next. At both New Haven and the Madison Square Garden benefit for Rubin “Hurricane” Carter the revue was an honest effort by some of rock’s leading people to humanize the communication between musician and audience.
Honky Château
Elton John’s Honky Château is a rich, warm, satisfying album that stands head and shoulders above the morass of current releases and has now succeeded in toppling the Stones from the top spot on the charts in only three weeks. Musically more varied, emotionally less contrived, lyrically more lucid than Tumbleweed Connection, Château rivals Elton John as his best work to date and evidences growth at every possible level.
Paul Simon: The Rolling Stone Interview
The interview with Paul Simon took place on three days during late May and early June. It produced 13 hours of tape for some poor soul to transcribe, a task made more difficult by the similarity between mine and Paul’s New York accents. Paul divides his time between a farm in Pennsylvania and a triplex, once owned by guitarist Andre Segovia, in New York’s Upper East Side, where the interview was taped. Peggy, Paul’s wife, was present only briefly.
Bandleader Duane Allman Dies in Bike Crash
Ol’ Duane was married to his music, the truth be known,” a close friend reflected after the funeral rites. “I guess him dyin’ so young, though, was almost inevitable. He had a wild and reckless streak in him, and apart from pickin’ his git-tar, he’d get…bored, I guess you could call it. On that account, he run through a lotta chicks and a lotta mean dope in his green time, and he purely loved to smoke up the highways on bikes that was too fast for him.
Ram
Ram represents the nadir in the decomposition of Sixties rock thus far. For some, including myself, Self-Portrait had been secure in that position, but at least Self-Portrait was an album that you could hate, a record you could feel something over, even if it were nothing but regret. Ram is so incredibly inconsequential and so monumentally irrelevant you can’t even do that with it: it is difficult to concentrate on, let alone dislike or even hate.
