A Conversation About Cardiacs, with Aaron Tanner and Rob Crow (Pinback)
Cardiacs are an English band that formed in 1977 and were mainly active until lead writer Tim Smith’s passing in 2020. They released numerous records and performed throughout the UK and Europe, yet they’ve received little recognition in the United States.
Now is the Time for Cardiacs
Mere weeks ago, at the age of 53, a random social media post caught my attention. It was made by someone I don’t even follow — the kind of anonymous post that one generally passes by — but this one was different. It contained a video link showing a group of people in messy, smeared, clown-like makeup and suits, along with a caption that said something like, “This is still the greatest thing ever.” The screen shot of the video looked like it was filmed in the ‘70s or early ‘80s.
For the sake of the Chesapeake Bay, ‘non-navigable’ waters need protection
The U.S. Supreme Court has once again waded into the debate over the reach of the Clean Water Act. How the courts rule could determine the fate of thousands of acres of wetlands and tens of thousands of miles of small streams critical to the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The high court heard oral arguments in Sackett v. EPA on Oct. 3.

Forty Years of Environmental Justice: Where is the Justice?
Abstract Environmental Justice (or“EJ”) has been recognized as a concept since at least 1982. After decades of incremental and ineffective efforts by the federal government, it has become clear that EJ must evolve beyond the concept stage if it is to be an effective vehicle for social and legal change. At its heart, EJ is a function of social inequities and environmental harms, and the disproportionate correlation between those components can no longer be ignored by state and federal actors.
It’s time to stem the flood of woes brought on by climate change
A man kayaks in flooded downtown Annapolis as residents survey conditions after Hurricane Isabel hit on September 19, 2003. Mike Land/Chesapeake Bay Program Climate change has been called an existential crisis, and rightly so. It is urgent and global — a fact that drew prominent world leaders and thousands of activists to Glasgow, Scotland last month. But for those of us who live in the Chesapeake Bay region, it’s personal.

Musician Jon Mueller on the satisfaction of small audiences and simple ideas
I first started listening to your work around 2005, when you were the anchor of the post-rock band Collections of Colonies of Bees but also making these concept-driven abstract albums. Over the years, the concepts have seemed to move into the foreground. Why? From the get-go, the ideas of doing stuff were always of interest to me. Even back when I was really young, in high-school bands and with some of the solo cassettes I did at that time (which are unlistenable), they were concept-driven.

Steroid sulfation research has come a long way
Making and breaking conjugates of sulfate with highly biologically potent steroid hormones was discussed from various angles at SUPA2017, Targeting Steroid Sulfation Pathways. This Themed Scientific Meeting was held 23–25 April 2017, at the Medical School at the University of Birmingham, UK. This research field has come a long way since enzymatic sulfation of steroids was first described in 1955 (De Meio et al. 1955).
