James Madison University: An Athletics Model That Works
The rapid evolution of intercollegiate athletics can be challenging to navigate. The narrative in the media and public sector tends to focus on financial challenges and opportunities in a context that seems more and more like professional sports, often overlooking the educational mission with which I believe it must always be aligned.
Opinion: Focus on first-gen college students pays dividends Original
In the last few weeks, students have received the exciting news that they have been admitted to college. For many first-generation students, admission to college can be the easy part. The challenges arise once they arrive on campus. Without the benefit of guidance from a parent, guardian or mentor who attended college, first-generation students can become lost on campuses, struggling to succeed academically and personally in a new and challenging environment.
Awe - Making the Museum
What’s awe? A blockbuster movie might be “awesome”. And we might be “in awe” of someone’s “awe-inspiring” talents. But what is it? An emotion. The primary emotions are happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust. Awe is a secondary emotion, a hybrid, like red and yellow creating orange. It’s a hybrid of fear, veneration and wonder. When we are in the presence of something bigger than ourselves — physically or otherwise — we raise our eyebrows, widen our eyes, and drop our jaws. Usually without smiling.
Developing Board Support for Civic Education and Democracy - AGB
The most effective boards exercise leadership in many ways. They constantly scan the national landscape for issues related to higher education and carefully consider implications for their institutions. They become informed and engaged in strategic discussions about current and emerging issues at their institutions. They understand the importance of shared governance and, in partnership with their presidents and chancellors, they develop institutional responses to key issues and opportunities.
Why Do We Call It Nonprofit? — Making the Museum
A nonprofit is a business — including nonprofits that make exhibitions. It must make more than it spends or it won’t survive. That leftover money is called profit. Then why do we call it nonprofit? There are many kinds of nonprofits in the tax code, but the National Council on Nonprofits says: The one common condition is not paying out profits (“…no part of the organization’s net earnings can inure to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual…”); hence the term, “nonprofit”.
Free expression is a foundation of excellence in education
W atching world events and controversies unfold, such as Russian control of news on the war in Ukraine, may give us a sense of First Amendment pride here. Yet make no mistake: Our nation struggles daily with the impact of and limits on free expression in classrooms, media, social channels and the public square.
Celebrating Our Mutual Home During Homecoming
This week is one of my favorite times of the year, James Madison University’s Homecoming week. It’s always a festive time — a time to celebrate and reconnect with alumni as they return to the university they love. We have a lot of events planned for alumni of all ages to enjoy, things such as the annual alumni golf tournament, a variety of alumni chapter gatherings, and even a scavenger hunt. But it’s not just the university they love and the homecoming revelry that brings them back.

“Great Expectations” and Board Education
Americans love comparisons and rankings, and colleges and universities are facing heightening demands to develop measurable goals and benchmarks for institutional progress and assessment. There may be plenty of raw data available, but the hard work comes in developing meaningful metrics, including identification of applicable peer and aspirant peer institutions, for different aspects of an institution’s programs and operations.

Alger Whatever your perspective is on recent social and civil unrest, we all can agree that our American democracy cannot be taken for granted, and that we must act to preserve and protect it now. While political and social divisions are as old as the republic itself, the profane violence we witnessed in our nation’s capital on Jan.

Jonathan Alger writes expressing his disappointment in a recent Breeze article about his leadership with the Board of Visitors and in Richmond. Courtesy of JMU Dear leadership of The Breeze, Over my years as President of JMU, I have enjoyed reading Breeze coverage of our community each week. It has usually provided a forum for hearing different opinions and hearing from the student perspective, which I have always valued.
Democracy Is Under Duress
Valerie Smith is President of Swarthmore College and Jonathan Alger is President of James Madison University. The fierce partisanship and polarization that too often paralyze our nation are on full display as we face historic crises—the COVID-19 pandemic, the related economic downturn, and the racial and xenophobic hatred and violence that continue to plague our country. History tells us that we cannot take democracy for granted; it demands effort and determination from every generation.
Colleges should play an important role in the U.S. Census, even and especially in light of the pandemic (opinion)
We are living in extraordinary times that pose great challenges to our society, economy and democracy. The emergence and spread of COVID-19 has forced public and private actors to react with unprecedented speed to the growing global public health crisis, and it has created widespread fear and uncertainty -- especially for communities and industries most vulnerable to disruption by virus-related demand declines, shutdowns and layoffs.
Jonathan R. Alger column: Bridging the career services gap
While nearly 80% of college students report that increasing their prospects for employment after graduation is their No. 1 reason for enrolling in higher education, research finds that fewer than 20% reach out to career services on their campuses for advice on finding a job. Gallup concluded in the same study that students who do seek career services support are far more confident that their field of study will lead to a good job than their peers who do not. Why the disconnect?
Alger, DuBois, and Blake column: Making college transfer work for everyone
By Jonathan Alger, Glenn DuBois, and Peter Blake College transfer is a topic of enormous importance when it comes to providing equal educational opportunities for our citizens. Successfully pursued, Virginia’s system of transfer provides an on-ramp to higher education for thousands of students. Students can enroll, earn an associate degree, and gain access to dozens of public and private institutions across the state.
Design Strategy: The Secret Weapon for Effective Digital Signage
Digital signage has revolutionized the way businesses communicate with a range of key audiences. At its best, it can dazzle the eye and engage the mind with important and entertaining content. But to make that happen, businesses are increasingly recognizing the essential role played by good design strategy. Good design gives companies an edge in effectively communicating with both internal and external audiences that they can’t get any other way.
Designing Digital Signage for Employee Engagement
Business headlines today make it clear that design gives companies an edge. Operating in dozens of countries with hundreds of thousands of employees, JPMorgan Chase (JPMC) benefits from strong design every day. This can be seen in all aspects of the firm, including digital signage. JPMC has an extensive, global deployment of digital signage ranging from individual screens to giant media walls.
