Mansfield Park | Stage Whispers
This opera is scored for four handed piano (Tom Griffiths and Phillipa Safey) which creates a wonderful depth of sound. It is particularly appropriate for the dramatic events that are portrayed in this story. Fanny Price (Michaela Cadwgan) is treated as an outlier by the Bertram's but gradually shows her value and place in the family. Each of the characters in this performance are portrayed very much as they are penned by Austen. This gives the show great charm.

Draft Rules On Cross Border Data Transfer
China recently released a set of draft rules which purport to relax some of the burdensome requirements on data exports. Amidst a yearslong tightening of data security laws and an anti-espionage campaign over the summer, the move was widely welcomed by foreign businesses as a signal that regulators were willing to temper national security objectives with the need to support economic growth.

La Voix Humaine: A Salon Series Event
La Voix Humaine is a highly charged one-act, one-woman opera by Poulenc based on a play of the same name written by Jean Cocteau, who directed the first production in 1959. We watch a woman receive a phone call from her lover and eavesdrop as over the course of 50 minutes, her life unravels as he tells her he is in love with someone else and ends their relationship. Her mood moves from tenderness to neediness and anguish, brilliantly expressed by Poulenc’s music.

'I’ve told everyone that it’s a comedy - but will anyone laugh?' Jonathan Dove on his new Marx opera
Marx is having a terrible day. He is supposed to be finishing volume two of Capital but he’s distracted by his lust for the maid, workmen are taking away the furniture, his daughter thinks she’s caught a spy.... and what will his wife say when she discovers he’s taken her silver to the pawnbroker? Where is Engels when Marx needs him most? The answers are in Marx in London, my new opera opening in Theater Bonn on 9 December.
Finding musical inspiration in scientific ideas
Recently, I’ve found myself wondering 'What would that sound like?' when considering certain scientific ideas, and of course the only way to find out is to write a piece of music. I had read some of James Lovelock‘s books 10 years ago, after a trip to the Arctic got me wondering if there might be a way I could write music about global warming.
'Fanny Price’s pained silences gave me the impulse to write music for her'
When I first read Mansfield Park, some 30 years ago, I heard music. That doesn’t always happen when I read, and it certainly didn’t happen when I read other novels by Jane Austen. There is something about this particular book that provoked musical ideas.
The silence of the lamb: giving Mansfield Park's Fanny Price a voice - Opera Canada
The meek heroine of Jane Austen’s third novel reveals little of herself. It was in those absences that Jonathan Dove found inspiration for his chamber opera When I first read Mansfield Park, I heard music. That doesn’t always happen when I read, and it certainly didn’t happen with Jane Austen’s other novels. But there’s something about this particular book that provoked musical ideas.
Chinese Investment in Africa: The Need for Clarity - Charged Affairs
China’s foreign investment in Africa has long engaged observers in the West, some of whom have characterized such investment to be driven predominantly by profits and natural resources. This article seeks to provide a counter perspective to this common narrative. It draws on recently published sources which find that Chinese investment on the continent extends beyond a self-interest in natural resources, and is perhaps more nuanced and diversified than commonly believed.
Singing Jane Austen
Jane Austen might not have been horrified to think of one of her novels being turned into an opera. She had a voracious appetite for theatre and comic opera, which she satisfied whenever she visited her brother Henry in London. Serious opera was perhaps another matter: during one such trip, she wrote to her sister: ‘I was very tired of Artaxerxes.’ Nonetheless, she transcribed its overture for her domestic enjoyment, alongside themes from The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute.
