Gibson: H.126 impact
Action is needed on biodiversity, climate — not just another plan. When the Senate Natural Resources Committee votes this week on the Community Resilience and Biodiversity Protection Act, or H.126, its members face a decision on whether only to enact an extended time frame for climate action and nature preservation — or also effectively to combat the threats that presently exist.
To protect our liberal culture, we must not tolerate blacklisting books
So what’s new? Universities have been exposed by The Times this week for drawing up blacklists of books they don’t want their students to be exposed to. This is yet one more of a never-ending list of ways in which a slow-burning form of Culture Year Zero is taking place within Britain. I am, however, a little self-conscious about portraying the monstrous nature of what is taking place in the terms I have just employed.
Why Don’t Companies Care About the Uyghurs?
There’s no way around it: The situation in Ukraine is nothing short of devastating. Firms and governments across the world are taking unprecedented steps against Putin’s actions. Almost 1,000 companies have restricted activities in Russia. But where are these restrictions over the genocides against the Uyghurs in China?

Our Generation Gap
To the Editor: I used to work for a man who was 80 years old. To this day, I admire him professionally and personally for many reasons, but he refused to admit that his sun was setting. He was no longer involved in the day-to-day operations of his business, but he was not ready to hand over the reins either. He would often arrive at the office and reassign staff or cancel projects without warning. Months of planning could be reversed with a single word.
Don’t Home-school for the Wrong Reasons
To the Editor: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of homeschooling families has doubled since the start of the pandemic. With a new school year about to begin and the delta variant at large, you may have considered homeschooling your own children. Concerns about health and safety are common and understandable, but they should not determine your choice to withdraw from the public school system. You should make that choice for the sake of your child’s education.
Assimilate the Barbarians
To the Editor: Reading about Avalon’s recent curfew brought to mind a quote by the philosopher Hannah Arendt: “Every generation, civilization is invaded by barbarians – we call them ‘children’.” Throughout history, barbarians have been dealt with in two ways: domination or assimilation. They were either subjugated by force, or they were invited to share in the privileges and responsibilities of civilization. It’s a shame that so many commentators seem to favor the former approach in Avalon.
Rooted in Community
To the Editor: Local institutions hold a special place in my heart. I love libraries where the staff remember your reading preferences, newspapers that run stories with the names of people you know, and businesses that help raise money for youth activities. It is only at the local level where the individual and the institution can have these powerful, mutually affecting interactions, but we increasingly take these blessings for granted and neglect the basic acts of care to sustain them.
Easy Money
To the Editor: I am cautiously optimistic with Joe Molineaux, as the county’s new economic development coordinator. He has the goods. What remains to be seen is whether his arrival can upset the status quo. Cape May County has not been serious about economic development for a long time, and our economy has suffered from an obsession with easy money. Tourism is easy money - like having the fish jump into your boat. It requires little effort to attract people to the shore.
An Opportunity for Local Democrats
To the Editor: I like to joke that being a Libertarian is like being a Jets fan. It’s easier to enjoy the playoffs if you were never a contender. Nevertheless, I am always disappointed to see Democrats underperform in our local elections. Not because I care for one party over the other, but because society always benefits from the competition of ideas. As described by Louis Brandeis in New State Ice Co. v. Liebmann, our local governments serve best as laboratories of democracy.
Defund or Disarm?
To the Editor: G.K. Chesterton famously wrote that good reform begins by questioning the purpose of a thing before changing it. Prior to removing a fence, he advised, you should figure out why it was put there in the first place. With that in mind, I ask the following question: what if we reduced the number of armed police officers? Watching the footage of George Floyd’s murder, I wondered what might have happened if the officers had been unarmed.
Luxury of Local Elections
To the Editor: Cape May County is decidedly Republican. The GOP has a 2-to-1 advantage with registered voters in the county, and many of their candidates have run unopposed in past elections. Now, there is an exhilarating kind of uncertainty about this year’s freeholder election, but it remains to be seen if party lines can be crossed to address unethical conduct.
