Two legal events from last week highlight our national wealth inequality, a frequent topic of political commentary. Some people hope for a wealth tax. On the one hand, two of the big law firms announced blockbusting annual results. Clifford Chance (pictured) reported that partnership profit rose 11% in the year to 30 April on revenue up 9% to £2.6bn. Profit per equity partner (PEP) rose 9% to £2.3m.

The new government has taken office, ministers have been appointed and departments reorganised. Does the new landscape reflect the underlying forces at work in our sector, enabling us to benefit the country? In all the endless commentary on our new government - focusing here particularly on its impact on the legal sector – I have seen little consideration of the economics of the legal profession. Justice is obviously composed of many parts, including courts and prisons.

More turbulence from the US for the rule of law

The Trump administration’s actions continue to cause waves throughout the international legal order. There are at least three areas of turbulence at the moment: the International Criminal Court, large US law firms, and data protection. To start with the International Criminal Court (ICC), the US Secretary of State wrote an article in the Wall Street Journal last week announcing ‘Why We’re Dismantling the International Criminal Court’.
