Why They Fight
“You should have never started it.” As cameras rolled during an explosive press conference in the Oval Office in February, U.S. President Donald Trump used these words to blame Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, for Russia’s full-scale invasion of his country in 2022. The two leaders were meant to sign a deal that day providing the United States with critical minerals from Ukraine, but that plan fell apart, and the U.S. president threw his Ukrainian counterpart out of the White House.
Are sanctions against Russia working? Two months on from the first targeting of Russian banks and oligarchs, Putin’s grip on power remains as firm as ever. This shouldn’t come as a surprise: restrictions on Iran, Venezuela and North Korea have impoverished their populations, but haven’t led to political revolutions. So how successful can sanctions be against Russia today? And even if they do work, will the cost to the West be too much to bear?

The ‘Soviet question’
Bashing the Brits all over the place has always been a popular approach to modern history, not least with regard to appeasement in the 1930s, and Jonathan Haslam is in that long tradition with The Spectre of War: International Communism and the Origins of World War II. Overt in his dislikes, for example of “well-groomed” diplomats and “the British who lurked”, he has clearly never met a cliché that he is unwilling to copy again, and again.

How coronavirus could change the global order
China World Western diplomacy might, if used judiciously, change Chinese behavior while Beijing is on the defensive A large screen in the street shows Chinese president Xi Jinping wearing a protective mask during his visit to Wuhan As much as it is a threat, coronavirus is also an opportunity. This clear demonstration of the chaos that the unseen can cause both advanced and developing nations gives global leaders the chance to reset positions and behavior.
What can parental engagement really do for schools?
My last research piece in these pages looked at the difficulties facing schools when addressing a whole-community issue (fitness and obesity), but what are the challenges when trying to get the community to support a school issue? The research on parental engagement has been fairly consistent over the past few years. It is clear that parents who engage in their children’s education have a positive effect.
Are we Getting the Message?
A former Downing Street communications chief wonders whether the Boris Johnson mood of optimism is making the country any happier Bring me sunshine in your smile Bring me laughter all the while In this world where we live there should be more happiness So much joy you can give to each brand-new bright tomorrow With near-record-breaking temperatures on July 25, much of the country sought shade and slowed down. There was no shade in Downing Street, SW1, and the pace was frenetic.
Beware of enormous effect sizes
How do you know which interventions will actually work in your school? You need to look beyond the effect size, says Jonathan Haslam I’ve learned a lot from these three numbers: +0.76, +0.11 and +0.26. They are all effect sizes from trials run by the Education Endowment Foundation. An effect size is a way of quantifying the difference between two groups, so, in these cases, a measure of the impact of an intervention.

How to explain the KGB's amazing success identifying CIA agents in the field?
As the Cold War drew to a close with the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, those at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, finally hoped to resolve many long-standing puzzles. The most important of which was how officers in the field under diplomatic and deep cover stationed across the globe were readily identified by the KGB. As a consequence, covert operations had to be aborted as local agents were pinpointed and CIA personnel compromised or, indeed, had their lives thrown into jeopardy.
A Distorted View of History Led America Astray
