The Dead Don’t Bleed by Neil Rollinson review - a gripping tale of family and forbidden love
‘Every landscape in this novel holds its ghosts’ … Andalucía in The Dead Don’t Bleed.Photograph: underworld/Shutterstock Andalucía is famous for its variety: high alpine mountains and snow-capped peaks, river plains and rolling olive groves, sun-baked coastlines and arid deserts. It is the perfect setting for Neil Rollinson’s debut novel, which is its own kind of spectacular mosaic.

Ask Me Again by Clare Sestanovich review - a rare kind of friendship
Ask Me Again, the first novel by American short story writer Clare Sestanovich, is structured around a series of questions. Each chapter title is a kind of inquiry: Did You See That?; Can You Feel That?; Can I Tell You Something? It’s a simple device, but it creates an atmosphere of interrogative uncertainty I last felt when reading Carol Shields’s Unless, a book in which adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions serve as chapter headings: Therefore; Instead; Despite.

Chosen families offer love for LGBTQIA+ youth
CONCORD, CA (Dec. 15, 2023) — During the holiday season, I am reminded of the power of chosen families that LGBTQIA+ people and our allies have formed and relied on. According to a 2022 report by the Trevor Project, 28% of LGBTQIA+ youth reported experiencing some degree of housing insecurity at some point in their lives. An earlier study from the University of Chicago found that LGBTQIA+ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness compared to non-LGBTQIA+ youth.
Help Rainbow continue Harvey Milk’s legacy of support
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (Nov. 17, 2023) — I participated in a panel at Northgate High School on Oct. 16 to commemorate the history and legacy of civil rights leader Harvey Milk. The event memorialized Milk’s 1978 debate at Northgate against Prop. 6, which sought to ban LGBTQIA+ individuals from teaching in public schools. The assembly reminded me of the work ahead due to the ebb and flow of progress and regression.

Nothing Phone (1) first impressions: Nothing more than hype?
You’ve heard the puns, seen the transparent back and those lights, and you’ve probably assumed you know exactly what the Nothing Phone (1) is. It’s a hype phone, nothing more, nothing less. Jonathan Lee on Hooking a Reader with the First Line
The following first appeared in Lit Hub’s The Craft of Writing newsletter—sign up here. * In Ursula LeGuin’s essay “The Fisherwoman’s Daughter,” she writes that “first sentences are doors to worlds.” I like the simplicity of that. If writing fiction is a process of playful problem-solving, the problem to solve with opening lines may be this: If the entryway is found to be too creaky, or too tricky to unlock, no one is going to bother to walk through it. But the opposite is a problem too.

Literary Conversations: Storied History
History isn't fixed. It's written and rewritten all the time as historians adopt contemporary perspectives on past events. Postcard from Toulouse, France: Is there any logic to the wandering eye?
Above: Place de la Trinité When I started sorting through our images of Toulouse, more shots seemed to be landing in the random file than normal. Part of that is the patterns of the city itself. The imaginative use of brick and stone, far more striking than the staid formal Williamsburg-look abundant in my original home state. And the way Toulouse tends to reuse not tear down the old, with an unbridled free-spirited approach to mixing centuries of architectural styles in the same block.
The Chronicle's 15 best books of 2021
When you are a book reviewer, you read a lot of books. An impossible number of books. And you love so many of them. These are the 15 that rose to the top.
Brackenridge Park: A ghost gives chase to his daughter’s murderers
On nights when the moon is full, sometimes the distant sound of a horn disturbs the sleep of those in homes perched on bluffs above the Olmos Basin. Not a truck horn from the highway nearby, but the horn of the hunt. It’s followed by the frantic baying of hounds heading toward Brackenridge Park, where their continued howling awakens some in River Road.
THE GREAT MISTAKE
Andrew Haswell Green's life and death lingered in obscurity until it was revived through this fascinating audiobook. Green's murder was the tragic ending to the life of one of the key architects of Central Park, the New York Public Library, and more. Green's shooting was never solved, but author Jonathan Lee's novel tries to fill in the blanks. Graham Halstead's riveting narration is as exceptional as the book itself.
Living History - Brooklyn Book Festival
Is the past actually inescapable? These three authors illuminate how storytellers can shape narratives of culture, class, and race and change how we understand our present and future. Jonathan Lee’s novel The Great Mistake captures New York City at the turn of the 20th century and revisits the murder of an influential city planner. Rivka Galchen’s Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch examines community and family amid the aftermath of accusations of witchcraft in the German duchy of Württemberg.
The Best Fiction of Summer 2021
Summer is coming to a close, and you’re running out of time to catch up on the best books of the season. THE PLOT By Jean Hanff Korelitz (Celadon Books) Review by Claire Gibson How far would a writer go to have the perfect plot? This is the question Jean Hanff Korelitz, whose bestselling You Should Have Known was adapted by HBO as The Undoing, explores in her latest novel, The Plot.
Review: 'The Great Mistake,' by Jonathan Lee
Jonathan Lee writes engrossing novels about public tragedies and private dilemmas, fusing vivid character studies with understated humor and aphoristic turns of phrase. The 40-year-old Brit's latest, a meticulous portrait of a real-life New York power broker, is further confirmation that he's among the best writers working today. "The Great Mistake" isn't a paragraph old when Lee kills off his protagonist.

By JONATHAN LEE Excerpted from THE GREAT MISTAKE ©2021 by Jonathan Lee, published by Alfred A. Knopf. (Pre-order here) One night, out walking, unable to sleep, and more fatigued than usual by his endlessly unfolding apprenticeship, the eighteen-hour days, the bugs that puncture his skin every night, the lack of money for real milk or for visiting his favorite sister, Andrew saw a man in the street who was raising a gun and pointing it at what?

From the Archive: All Tomorrow's Parties by Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince - BOMB Magazine
No one remembers how this interview, originally published in BOMB’s third issue in the spring of 1982, came about. “It just felt like a continuation of my easy connection and conversations with Richard,” Barbara Kruger responded when I asked her. It was not unusual in those days for artists or writers or musicians to come up to me on the streets of SoHo or Tribeca and say, “I’m doing an interview for the next issue with…” “You are?” I would say. And we would set to work.

Nicholas Harris - Death of an Urbanist
Like High Dive, Jonathan Lee’s 2015 novel that retold the story of the 1984 Brighton hotel bombing, The Great Mistake is a work of historical ventriloquism. This time, his chosen dummy is the 19th-century lawyer and urban planner Andrew Haswell Green. Now largely forgotten, this ‘Father of Greater New York’ was responsible for creating Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other Manhattan institutions.
Backbone Is A Noir Adventure About Racism In Anthropomorphic Vancouver
Backbone, a noir adventure game set in an anthropomorphic version of Vancouer, is coming out on June 8. I have already played the free Steam demo, Backbone: Prologue, six times. Now, the Steam algorithm knows I’m a sucker for noir detective stories and that is, indeed, what Backbone is. It’s got all the usual clichés, like a wisecracking private eye in a trenchcoat, a rainy city trapped perpetually in night time, and a classy night club run by the mob.

A Stone Ridge Author Found the Hudson Valley Via a 19th-Century Murder
Author Jonathan Lee Photo by Tanja Kernweiss A walk in Central Park led Jonathan Lee to a bench, a discovery about the historical murder of Andrew Haswell Green, and the Hudson Valley. Last summer I moved from Brooklyn to Ulster County, via 19th-century New York. It wasn’t the most direct route. I recommend the I-87 for those in a hurry. My journey began in earnest in Central Park. I was climbing the Great Hill with a sandwich in my pocket when I decided to take a path through Glen Span Arch.

Good Housekeeping FYI: These Are Walmart's Memorial Day Hours In case you forgot something for May 31. Eat This, Not That! This Fast-Casual Chain Is Coming To A Walmart Near You In the past year, around 100 of McDonald's locations inside Walmart stores have shut down, and soon, only about 150 locations of America's favorite burger chain will remain in the retail giant's spaces. This means that plenty of other fast-food restaurants have been swooping in to take McD's empty spots.
After the Father by Wendy S. Walters - BOMB Magazine
My mother is selling the house I grew up in and has told me to take what I want from the basement. In the clutter that remains from forty years of family life, among the boxes of books, childhood games, once-favorite clothes that no longer suit anyone, and unopened gifts from my first wedding, sit shelves of my father’s tools, which have barely been touched in the decade since his death. It’s vexing to sort through all my father has left behind, now appearing out of context.
From our Spring Issue: Melissa Febos by Sarah Neilson - BOMB Magazine
The first time I met Melissa Febos, she was teaching a corporeal writing workshop at Seattle’s Hugo House. I had not yet read her books, but her presence in the classroom was energetic, grounded, attentive. And every sentence was uttered as if she could only think and speak deliberately.
The Great Mistake by Jonathan Lee - BOMB Magazine
The last attempt on the life of Andrew Haswell Green took place on Park Avenue in 1903. News of his murder filled the front page of the New York Times: “‘Father of Greater New York’ Shot in Front of His Home.” The motive was offstage, unaccounted for. Speculation filled the Herald, the Tribune, the Sun. Some writers got excited by the victim’s fame or the five shots fired. Others stared straight-faced at the date of his death: Friday, November thirteenth.
