By: Jonathan Porter, Executive Vice President, Global Chief Risk Officer, RGA When global interest rates rose sharply after more than a decade of historic lows, insurers witnessed the breakdown of long-standing assumptions. Market volatility increased, asset-liability mismatches became more evident, and long-duration portfolios were tested under changing economic conditions.
Influencers Forum: Business Start-Ups
Maarten Hoffmann: Any new business owner needs to consider whether there is a market. Where is my market? Do I know how to enter that field? And is there a gap? Would you agree with these first basic considerations? Robert Taylor: Basically, yes. Many people have perceived that there's a market where there's not one, which is a dangerous thing to do. Or, they will go in, without sufficient capital and then lose out and waste their or other people's money.

Time for a PE bounceback?
High interest rates (debt expensive), lower transaction deal values (most sub £10m regionally), and global uncertainty, have led to a reduction in private equity (PE) deals over the past three years. PE investors aim to turn or sell investee companies and groups after three to five years. Recently, many PE investors have held their investments longer. However, signs are more positive, with interest rates starting to fall, global uncertainty reducing a little, and deal values rising.

Who is on your Christmas card list?
I don’t have a desk anymore. In fact, I don’t even have a place that I call my office. But if I did, you would no doubt look at me, sat there, and think I am very boring. For I would have been sitting at the same, now non-existent, desk in my, now non-existent, office for nearly quarter of a century. I would be the first to agree with those of you who say I’m boring for doing that, but I also reflect on it with great pleasure.
I’m worried about what Labour might do to our schools
In my first lesson teaching Year 8 in inner-city Birmingham, one boy, seeing the opening slide of my ‘Introduction to Judaism’ PowerPoint, rocked back on his chair, and, with a level of focus that he never matched again, simply said, ‘I f***ing hate the Jews.’ The Teach First training programme had promised us ‘challenging’ schools. I finalized a modification for him a few months before, and he was concerned his current wife was filing for divorce.

What are true wireless earbuds, and are they right for you?
It feels like true wireless earbuds have been around forever, but they’re relatively new to the audio scene. True wireless earbuds piqued the ears of the public back in 2016 when Apple first released the AirPods. Not long after, other companies followed suit and arguably improved upon this tech, and now consumers enjoy an abundance of choices. What are true wireless earbuds, and are they right for you? No worries if you haven’t heard of true wireless earbuds before.

Mars hope fulfilled - deep space beckons
ByJonathan Porter Published May 26, 2021 • 9 min read After six years’ work and an epic 204-day 480-million kilometre odyssey it all came down to a single 27-minute burn to insert the UAE Hope probe safely into Mars’ orbit – and vindicate the Arab world’s faith in the mission. At stake was whether the probe was to skip off the thin Martian atmosphere and into deep space (to be lost forever among the stars), or be smashed into cosmic dust on the distant soil of the Red Planet.
