Why we launched Denmark’s second Young Academy (and what’s different about it)
As early-career researchers navigate increasingly complex challenges — from climate change to digital transformation — they need to be empowered to take bold steps, form lasting networks and champion science that serves society. This is where National Young Academies come in.

On the Importance of Fresh Stock Solutions for Surfactant-Free Colloidal Syntheses of Gold Nanoparticles in Alkaline Alcohol and Water Mixtures
Abstract : A room temperature surfactant-free synthesis of gold nanoparticles in the size range 10–20 nm that only requires HAuCl4 as the precursor, NaOH as the base, water as the solvent and a mono-alcohol such as methanol or ethanol as the reducing agent, has recently been detailed. This approach is promisingly simple to obtain colloids stable for months.
Self-supported Pt-CoO networks combining high specific activity with high surface area for oxygen reduction
Abstract Several concepts for platinum-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are presented that exceed the US Department of Energy targets for Pt-related ORR mass activity. Most concepts achieve their high ORR activity by increasing the Pt specific activity at the expense of a lower electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). In the potential region controlled by kinetics, such a lower ECSA is counterbalanced by the high specific activity.
Self-supported nanostructured iridium-based networks as highly active electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution in acids

Self-Supported Nanostructured Iridium-Based Networks as Highly Active Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution in Acid
Self-Supported Nanostructured Iridium-Based Networks as Highly Active Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution in Acid Due to the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), high precious metal loadings are currently required at the anode of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. In this work, we present a novel, scalable and efficient method for the fabrication of high surface area iridium-based electrocatalysts.
Ir nanoparticles with ultrahigh dispersion as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst: synthesis and activity benchmarking
Ir nanoparticles with ultrahigh dispersion as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst: synthesis and activity benchmarking In this work, we present a facile and straightforward approach to synthesize, activate and benchmark small, i.e. 1.6 nm in diameter, Ir nanoparticles (NP) as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts.
Colloids for Catalysts: A Concept for the Preparation of Superior Catalysts of Industrial Relevance
Compared to conventional preparation methods for supported heterogeneous catalysts, the use of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) allows for a precise control over size, size distribution, and distribution/location of the NPs on the support. However, common colloidal syntheses have restrictions that limit their applicability for industrial catalyst preparation. We present a simple, surfactant‐free, and scalable preparation method for colloidal NPs to overcome these restrictions.

On the Preparation and Testing of Fuel Cell Catalysts Using the Thin Film Rotating Disk Electrode Method
A dark brown, colloidal suspension of Pt NPs is obtained from the protocol section 1.1 (Figure 1, left). The colloidal suspension is so stable that it can be stored for more than 1 month without any precipitation. Larger Pt NPs are synthesized by decreasing the NaOH concentration18. However, the colloidal suspension becomes less stable by decreasing the NaOH concentration.

Nanoparticles in a Box: A Concept to Isolate, Store and Re-use Colloidal Surfactant-Free Precious Metal Nanoparticles
A concept is introduced that allows for the isolation, storage and re-use of surfactant-free precious metal nanoparticles (NPs) of catalytic relevance (Pt and Ru). “Surfactant-free NPs” well-defined in size (1 - 2 nm) are prepared in alkaline ethylene glycol. After synthesis these NPs are stabilized by surface bound CO, formed during synthesis by solvent oxidation, and OH-, added to the reaction mixture.
