Jonathan Van Ness (he/they) is a beauty expert, the founder of JVN Hair, host of the podcast Getting Better With Jonathan Van Ness, a co-host of Queer Eye (the 10th and final season dropped on Netflix last month), and currently on tour with Hot and Heated, a comedy show. Below, Van Ness — a figure skating superfan — weighs in on which athletes to pay attention to at the Milano-Cortina Olympic Games. I first saw figure skating on TV in 1992, when I was 4 years old.
I Tried "Self-Reiki," A Sleep Ritual Approved By Jonathan Van Ness
"But even if you go in with positive vibes and good intentions, there's still a chance you'll end up hiding in the bathroom to escape toxicity and cringe-worthy moments with the fam. While you can't predict what they'll say or do, you can control how you react to the stress.
Let Them Stare Book Review
age 14+ Funny, endearing, queer positive teen in search of answers. Parents need to know that Let Them Stare by Jonathan Van Ness and Julie Murphy is about 18-year-old gender nonconforming Sully, who's investigating his small town's past while trying to find his place in the world. There's a lot of strong language including "s--t," "f--k," and lots of variations of both; and "d--k," while "bitch" is used affectionately or as a compliment.
LET THEM STARE | Kirkus Reviews
Quippy dialogue and a kinetic pace distinguish this uplifting novel. Van Ness, a hairstylist known for the TV series Queer Eye, teams up with best-selling author Murphy for this story about one teen’s very gay summer. Recent high school graduate Sully is ready to leave behind the woes of being a nonbinary fashionista in small-town Hearst, Pennsylvania, and jet off to the Big Apple, where a yearlong internship with an influencer awaits.

PRETTY CURIOUS | How Did You Go From Kitchen Sink to Oprah Winfrey? with Lisa Price
This week, we have Carol’s Daughter founder, Lisa Price! Lisa tells Jonathan about her decades-long journey to lasting success: from back in the early days when she made and sold products out of her kitchen at a time when there were barely any natural hair products on the shelves, all the way through being inducted into the National Museum of African-American History and Culture.

What’s the State of Misinformation? with Renée DiResta
We’re all so used to turning to our phones for information, but how exactly does it travel across the internet…and what happens if that information is wrong? Renée DiResta is the perfect expert to break it all down for us! Jonathan and Renée dig into the differences and potential dangers of misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda. From generative AI and Father Coughlin, to political polarization and being subpoenaed by Jim Jordan, we cover it all.
GORGEOUSLY ME! | Kirkus Reviews
An animated look at celebrating who you are and never letting others dim your light. A group of young people tackle activities both big and small, such as playing soccer or choosing an outfit for the day, with attentiveness, verve, and loving support for one another, all the while celebrating what makes each and every one of us “perfectly, happily, gorgeously” ourselves. Van Ness’ uplifting, encouraging text is paired with Nair’s exuberant illustrations.

Who Were History’s Queer Seamen? with Dr. Seth LeJacq
Sea Daddies! Sea Queens! Land hoes! This week, we’re getting wet and wild with Dr. Seth LeJacq to learn what life was like for queer sailors in the British navy from the 15th century to the 19th century. How did these sailors express their gender and sexuality? What did they risk—legally and socially—when they pursued queer relationships? And were their ship hammocks really sturdy enough for a night of deep sea “exploration”?
Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein
Is life one big cosmic orgy? To wrap up our Pride Beyond Borders series, we’re going big… with an episode all about our universe! Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein joins Jonathan to discuss why spacetime isn’t straight, what quantum spin can teach us about gender expression, and why the key to understanding the cosmos may just be (wait for it) the world’s biggest dental dam.
What Are The Global Politics Of Drag? with Professor Kareem Khubchandani
This June, we’re celebrating Pride Beyond Borders! And to kick off our series, we’re exploring global drag culture with Professor Kareem Khubchandani aka Dr. LaWhore Vagistan. We’re learning how drag artists around the world stage political dialogues with their audiences, how queer nightlife can connect diasporic communities, and how this art form can be used to challenge—rather than reinforce—the legacies of colonialism and white supremacy.

Queer Eye’s season 7 cast features the fab five: Jonathan Van Ness, Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski, and Tan France. They help struggling residents of New Orleans nominated by loved ones, but where are the heroes? The long-running Netflix series is a heartwarming take on a makeover, and it’s not just any old glow-up. The fab five transforms cast members’ circumstances and their lives – such as giving Speedy a wheelchair-friendly home. So, who is in the Queer Eye season 7 cast?
How Are Iranians Making History? (Part One) with The Iranian Diaspora Collective
A note from team Getting Curious: This episode contains descriptions of violence that are at times graphic. If you haven’t heard about the women-led revolution happening in Iran, or you thought things had quieted down, that’s by design. The Islamic Republic of Iran has banned women from dancing, singing, and showing their hair in public. And they’ve restricted Internet access for people across the country.
What’s The Steamy History Of Valentine’s Day? with Dr. Sally Holloway
Roses are red, violets are blue, we have a Valentine’s Day episode for you! This week on Getting Curious, we’re learning all about the history of Valentine’s Day, with returning guest Dr. Sally Holloway. Was the holiday always about love and romance? When did roses and chocolates become go-to gifts? And what would people living in Georgian England think of celebrations like Galentine’s Day?
What’s At The Heart Of Black Disability Politics? with Professor Sami Schalk
In 1977 more than 100 disabled activists in San Francisco took over a federal building for 25 days. It was the longest non-violent occupation of a federal building in United States history. As they advocated for their rights, they found an ally in the Black Panther Party, which understood that disability rights were connected with their own anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist racial justice work.
Gender Identity Resources — Story Pirates
On season 5 of the Story Pirates Podcast, we were immensely proud to share 10-year-old Ella’s story, “The Prince-ess,” with a message of not just acceptance, but celebration of our authentic selves. We are also proud of the entirely trans/non-binary group of Story Pirates who adapted, composed and performed the song.
How Diverse Was The Ancient Mediterranean? with Professors Sarah Derbew and Nandini Pandey
This week, we’re traveling back to one of our favorite sites for curiosity: the ancient Mediterranean. Professors Sarah Derbew and Nandini Pandey join Jonathan to discuss how people across the region experienced cultural diversity; how they related to—and set themselves apart from—their neighbors; and what it looks like to approach the ancient past on its own terms rather than filtered through contemporary assumptions. Sarah Derbew is an assistant professor of Classics at Stanford University.
Which Queer Eye presenter has the best house?
Of course, the true centrepiece of Antoni’s home is the galley-style kitchen, where warm wooden cabinetry contrasts with white marble countertops. Antoni’s favourite part of the kitchen, he explains, is the large central island, because it’s where guests congregate while he prepares a meal. Accented by Antoni’s beloved French copper pans, which he believes in keeping easily accessible due to their frequent use, the space feels warm, lived-in, and inviting.
Jonathan Van Ness: We Are Still Not Taking Monkeypox Seriously Enough
Jonathan Van Ness Credit - Danielle Levitt Watching the government’s botched response to monkeypox has been surreal, and in many ways, I believe it’s been fueled by homophobia and transphobia. When an outbreak affects mainly men who have sex with men, some portion of our elected legislators will have no incentive to act. They think it will not touch their constituents, which is obviously messed up because people’s lives are at stake, and there are queer people in all 50 states.
If Faith Moves Mountains, Can It Also Move Climate Action? with Dekila Chungyalpa
In 2015, Senator Jim Inhofe brought a snowball to Congress to “prove” that climate change wasn’t real. Only God, he claimed, could change the climate. He was wrong on two fronts: one, climate change is real. And two, faith and climate science are *not* incompatible. This week, Dekila Chungyalpa joins Jonathan to discuss her work collaborating with faith leaders on climate efforts, how she confronts climate change disinterest and skepticism, and why she’s bringing the sacred back into science.
Jonathan Van Ness Reveals Why The Term 'Body Positivity' Is Problematic
I never knew I was body positive. I was positively aware I had a body, but one I found unbearably undesirable to myself and, from what I’d been told, definitely to other people. For much of my life, I couldn’t find one thing about the way I looked that I enjoyed. It took me decades to accept my body and eventually celebrate it. As someone who is known for practising self-love, I’m often unintentionally reminded of the double-edged sword of being associated with body positivity.

Queer Eye: Jonathan Van Ness Faces Misogyny As Nonbinary Person

The star elaborates that some days he feels more masculine, and other days he feels more feminine, so all pronouns apply. The reality star has also been open about his battle with HIV and explained that he hopes talking about it will normalize it in society.
