Jonathan Pasternak has built a nationally recognized debtor bankruptcy practice based on volume and depth of experience. With more than three decades of experience in bankruptcy and restructuring, he has served as both an attorney and a consultant on complex financial matters. His work has centered on helping businesses and stakeholders manage financial distress with practical solutions. Over time, he has developed steady working relationships with companies, lenders, investors, fiduciaries, and other professionals involved in restructuring and insolvency proceedings.
For 36 years, Jonathan has focused on corporate reorganization and financial restructuring. His primary area of concentration has been the reorganization of private and public companies facing operational and financial challenges. He has represented hundreds of clients, including individual business owners and large corporate entities, across a wide range of industries.
His experience includes debtor and creditor representation, loan workouts, recapitalizations, asset sales, and complex Chapter 11 proceedings. Pasternak has advised institutional stakeholders and court-appointed representatives responsible for overseeing distressed companies. In each matter, he has applied careful financial analysis and sound legal judgment while keeping business objectives at the forefront.
In addition to core bankruptcy and restructuring work, Jonathan has handled commercial real estate and finance matters tied to distressed assets. He has addressed issues involving troubled property portfolios, real estate-backed debt, and transaction-driven reorganizations. Whether working through negotiated resolutions or court-supervised proceedings, he has maintained a steady focus on stability and long-term viability.
For more than 20 years, Pasternak led his own boutique bankruptcy law firm. During that time, the firm became one of the leading Chapter 11 debtor practices in the nation by case volume. He managed firm operations while maintaining a significant caseload, guiding clients and professionals through complex insolvency proceedings.
His leadership and work in bankruptcy and restructuring earned industry recognition. In 2017, Jonathan was named YJP Professional of the Year for his contributions to insolvency initiatives. He was also consistently cited among the top 20 bankruptcy lawyers in the nation by case volume and recognized as a Super Lawyer for more than 15 consecutive years. He has lectured at insolvency conferences and at his former secondary school and law school. He has also appeared on the radio and television to discuss large-scale bankruptcy matters.
Pasternak graduated cum laude from The Pingry School in 1981 and later from Brown University in 1985, where he majored in American History and Literature. He served as a class representative for both institutions and continues to remain involved in alumni efforts. His spouse and two of his three children are Brown University graduates, reinforcing the family’s connection to the school.
