Last spring, I walked into my daughter's room on a mild afternoon and found the window wide open while the central air ran full tilt, cooling the great outdoors. She'd cracked it that morning and forgotten. The AC had no clue, so it kept running against an open screen for who knows how long. Most of my windows already had sensor-triggered automations wired up for the alarm and the lights, and it occurred to me that the same hardware could fix this, too.

I could never remember whether I'd closed the garage door. I'd back the 4Runner down the driveway, get half a mile down the road, and the doubt would start. A few mornings a year I'd walk out to find it had been up all night, with January air pouring into the attached garage and creeping toward the house. Yelling at Alexa never solved the real issue, because the door has no idea what state it's in or whether anyone meant to leave it that way.

Turn off the always-on display No Apple Watch has a bigger or brighter screen than the Ultra 3. With your wrist down, it still ticks over once a second to stay readable. That nonstop glow is what drains the battery faster than anything else you do in a day. This one's on the watch, not your phone. In the Watch app, head to Settings > Display & Brightness and switch off Always On. Now the screen goes dark until you raise your wrist or tap it. Within a day, I'd stopped missing it.
