1 INTRODUCTION Crowding in the emergency department (ED) has become a serious and growing problem throughout the world, causing major public health problems and affecting many countries regardless of the health system or socioeconomic level (Austin et al., 2020). Saturation, collapse or crowding, occurs when the demand for care is excessive or exceeds the available resources, and thus making it difficult to provide urgent care to patients.
