1 INTRODUCTION Climate change presents a major threat to both nature's eco-systems and the human civilization. As it is caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, it is crucial to control and reduce the emissions of these gases. Emissions trading systems (ETSs) constitute a powerful and widely used policy tool to accomplish this goal; a prominent example of such a system is the European Union ETS (EU ETS).
