I had always been an avid reader, but the summer before starting undergrad I began reading and writing poetry seriously for the first time. I was drawn toward love poems—whether because of or despite having no beloved in my life—and wrote truly terrible sonnets. I spent most of the time alone, in a near-beachfront apartment my dad had begun renting; he was mostly gone, following my parents’ recent divorce.

Writing Prompt: re-spelling

The first step is the hardest but richest: think of a vernacular with an alternate sense of spelling to standardized English. Re-spellings often—though not necessarily!—invoke alternate or coded experiences. This might be a dialect, specialized language or shorthand, antiquated or speculative language, developmentally or neurodivergently coded spelling, or something which elides all these and appears wholly made-up.

A Sonnet

Find and share the perfect poems. I sat in windows doorways, closets prostrate upon the bed, or walking for hours, naming the flow ers I could. When misery came and went in 1995, mira culously love took his place. Against my better judgment, I, occasionally, in vited misery back in. He’d look at me brilliantly like one staring at the sun and recline on his golden door. He’d leave inevitably for another, another more but things were evident. I liked how he’d watch me pile wood on the floor.
