Taking Sides in a War
Christians are not condemned for taking part in military operations because it is justified with the argument of defence. However, taking sides in a war and conflict situation might not be morally right as Christians are to be prophets of reconciliation and peace. A vision of the king of peace presented by prophet Isaiah goes thus: He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into ploughers and their spears into pruning hooks.
Church Should Stand Up
“Christianity stands or falls with its revolutionary protest against violence, arbitrariness, and pride of power, and with its plea for the weak… Christians should take a stronger stand in favour of the weak rather than considering first the possible right of the strong.” Dear Christian Leadership of India, I have started this open letter of request with the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German Lutheran pastor, theologian and anti-Nazi dissident, from his sermon on 2 Corinthians 12:9...
Holy Things to the Holy
The unexpected turnout of events and commotions happened in St Mary’s Basilica in Ernakulam, Kerala during this Christmas season has severely wounded the sentiments of the Catholic faithful across the globe as much as the Basilica parish members.
Catholic Media on the Decline
A cartoon widely circulated in social media on this year’s Press Freedom Day depicted a pair of huge boots-worn legs and two fallen journalists in front of it in a submission posture donning their journalistic attire. One of them comments, ‘India has further fallen down in the press freedom index,’ while the latter wonders about its reason. The cartoonist Manjul demonstrates the fallen state of Indian media in a few strokes.
Wake-up Call: Be A Communicating Church
St. Paul was in chains under a house arrest when he was composing the epistle to the Ephesians. As he was writing the final words of the epistle, he was certain that, sooner than later he would be appearing before the Roman courts. For a split second, Paul might have been intimidated, recalling the fate of persecuted Christians ranging from John the Baptist to Stephen the deacon. And his fears precipitated him to make a request of prayers to the ‘saints,’ the community of Christians he addresses.
A People-centred Church
One of my edifying evangelising experiences occurred in a conversation with a Hindu during a train journey. The irony was that it was not I who evangelised him, but he did baptise me with a fresh and concise understanding of what Christianity is all about! Being a person who reads the Bible several times as well as searching for the core of Christianity for some time, he humbly claimed that he could summarise Christianity in four Biblical verses. I was so intrigued to listen to him further.
Toxic Tongues
A fortnight ago a message popped up in our family WhatsApp group ostensibly promoting the members of the community we belong to. The same message, which also indicated a sort of contempt for another religious community, appeared in my maternal family group within a short while. In a day or two, a few of my friends discussed with me that the same message is being circulated in their family groups as well. A couple of days after another bigoted message appeared in my WhatsApp group again.
The Great Indian Stalkers
“If you are not properly dressed you will be raped” is a normal justification for a rapist and his advocates in India. Today, wearing an attire of any religious identity would put you in greater trouble of being stopped at a railway station and being harassed by the rightwing Hindu fanatics in public. This was the ordeal four Catholic nuns underwent last week in a train passing via Uttar Pradesh.
