We can count the ways that make the Tedeschi Trucks Band one of America’s finest groups in any scene, but there are two primary reasons: this is the band blessed with two great “singers,” whose names are on the marquee. Of course, Susan Tedeschi retains status as a premier blues rock chanteuse, while her husband and partner in music Derek Trucks is a genuine slide guitar virtuoso whose playing always rises to the level of a sublime singing quality.

New Venue for Sippin’ and Spinnin’

Among the multitude of places to chill in the Santa Ynez Valley, we can now add the aptly named Analogue Room. It is a unique concept and hangout zone, with rotating vinyl and a rotating wine list, nestled in the Founders’ Square area of Solvang, and extending special appeal to vinyl lovers. Turntables assume a prominent place on the long bar in the space, with a selection of albums packed onto the shelves on the wall, adjacent to the wine and craft beers on display.

While much of the Music Academy of the West’s summer festival runs more or less like predictable clockwork, the annual gala event is more of a movable feast. Time, place and featured artist vary from year to year, from a pre-festival warm-up date to a mid-festival spot — as with last year’s Chris Thile-featuring gala — and, this year, as an end cap, a week after the official concert finale.
