Joe Crowley: New York politics is never boring
If the past five years have taught us anything, it’s that New York politics is just as unpredictable as ever. And I don’t just mean election outcomes – though, those, including my own, certainly add to the unexpected. But by unpredictability I mean the shifting political dynamics of the city and state and the events that helped shape them. Perhaps nothing has been more unpredictable in New York politics than the rise of Donald Trump.
Crowley: Put ICE back on its leash
Never before have I seen a president throw his weight so forcefully behind policies that tear away at the moral fabric of America. From instituting an unconstitutional Muslim travel ban to appointing his anti-immigrant lackeys to the highest positions of power, President Donald Trump has corrupted the powers of his office. The inhumanity of the Trump administration is most clearly shown through immigration policies that have ripped thousands of defenseless children from their mothers’ arms.

Two congressional leaders from New York is not too many
With House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi recently turning 78, the political cognoscenti wonder when she may retire and who will replace her. Rep. Joe Crowley, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, who represents a district in Queens and the Bronx, is widely viewed as Pelosi’s most likely successor. Crowley is the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives. Nos. 2 and 3, Reps. Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn, are 78 and 77, respectively.
Bail reform will bring justice
There’s no other word to describe it when two-thirds of the state’s jail population hasn’t even been convicted of a crime: 16,000 New Yorkers are currently being held behind bars as they wait for their trial to begin. That’s far too many people locked away, stripped of their freedom and dignity, when they have yet to be found guilty of any sort of wrongdoing. This is a far cry from a justice system that presumes innocence until proven guilty.
How the 2020 census citizenship question will affect New York’s headcount
With the federal government gearing up for the 2020 census, the decennial count of the country’s population has recently become controversial due to the addition of a question asking if the respondent is “a citizen of the United States.” The question, not seen since the 1950 census, was added to the survey by the U.S. Commerce Department – ostensibly at the request of the U.S. Justice Department in order to monitor potential violations of voting law.
Evidence-Based Community Dental Programs Are Improving Health Access Now
Instead of debating how to increase access to healthcare, particularly for underserved people, we should focus on the evidence-based, community solutions connecting patients to the right care at the right time – right now.Whichever side of the aisle you sit on, to change the status quo and create sustainable healthcare programs we need to start by looking at the real barriers underserved people face: low income, lack of awareness of available public health resources, low health literacy, and...
GOP’s tax reform bill would rob middle class in Queens
The neighborhood I grew up in was marked by a sense of community. It was more than a set of city blocks; it was a place where families and friends helped and looked out for one another. Through good times and bad, neighbors did the best they could to put food on the table, save some money and help their kids get a leg up in the world. Those goals are now at risk. The Republican tax bill has put neighborhoods like Queens and the Bronx – the very communities we should protect – in danger.
