I hobbled to my feet with more effort than it should ever take. Using a trekking pole for support, I hobbled over to a stump, slowly sat down, and attempted to both extend and flex my knee. With almost no play in either position, my leg came to rest in a half-bent position. Tight and swollen, it was a familiar sensation. The sliver of hope I had when I fell asleep was all but gone now. I wasn’t walking out of here, let alone hiking two more days to Silver City.

CDT Days 7 & 8: Invincibility and Mortality

I moseyed out of Lordsburg perhaps a little later than I should have. Part of me was hesitant to get back on the trail and risk running into a situation where there might not be a water source for me out in the desert. But that was the name of the game, and after only a day and a half here, I was more than ready to move on from this town.

CDT Day 4–6: Bovines, Storms, and Town Chores

4/11/26 Day 4, 20.0 miles, 78.3 total I slept in a bit and started my day slowly at camp. The first order of business was taping up the areas of my legs that had chafed over the last few days. Normally, starting the day so close to 8 a.m. in the desert is a figurative (potentially literal) death sentence. But the weather seemed to work in my favor today. The temperatures were mild, the sky cloudy, and the wind brisk.
