Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I became a Forbes contributor mid-2013.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! I learned how to type on an old-fashioned typewriter in Mrs. Nunez' typing class at Dana Jr. High in Arcadia, CA. Best class ever.
How is social media changing news?
Power is increasingly bottom-up instead of top-down as in the past.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
They all write fiction...oh wait, you mean like Clark Kent?
What does it mean to be a journalist?
I'm still trying to figure it out.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
As part of a mass email sent out to 1,000 other journalists, with my name misspelled.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Google Docs and a browser.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter, at least these days. It really depends on the job I'm trying to get done.
Who do you wish followed you?
Whoever my future clients are following. I'm still working on figuring out who that is.
Why did you become a journalist?
Forbes offered me the chance to write for them. How could I pass that up?
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write about what you know and listen to your editor when he tells you to stay away from politics.
When's the best time to pitch you?
During lunch, over a good slice of pizza.
