The equipment manager for the Florida Panthers and the U.S. men's national hockey team has been suspended after he was arrested Friday on misdemeanor charges of battery/domestic violence and unauthorized use of 911 services. Jail records indicate Thaddeus "Teddy" Richards was arrested in Coral Springs, Fla., and was being held at the Broward Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as of Friday night.
Anthony Mantha signs with New Jersey Devils for 2 years, $9.5 million Original
Anthony Mantha, who scored a career-high 33 goals last season for the Pittsburgh Penguins, will be going to the New Jersey Devils next season, signing a two-year contract worth $9.5 million, the team announced Wednesday. He will make $5.4 million in 2026-27 and $4.1 million the following season ($4.75 million AAV). Mantha’s career year ended in disappointment when he had only one assist and zero goals in the Penguins’ six-game first-round loss against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Penguins 2026-27 roster projection: Assessing a crowded-yet-lopsided Pittsburgh lineup Original
The Pittsburgh Penguins look a little different now than they did a few months ago, though most of the primary characters remain. Is that a good thing? Can they reach the postseason again? Are young players being left out in the cold? These are all legitimate questions without right or wrong answers. But let’s break it all down. Much could change between now and puck drop on Sept.
What I’m hearing on the Penguins and Jason Robertson, free agency and contracts Original
PITTSBURGH — So, is it time to end the Jason Robertson-to-Pittsburgh talk? The Penguins are still very much open to acquiring Robertson, whom they believe could be a short- and long-term building block for president/GM Kyle Dubas’ vision. The Penguins, as previously reported, believe there is a real chance Robertson would agree to play in Pittsburgh. Trading for his brother, Nick Robertson, doesn’t figure to hurt the cause.
The loyalty of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang is a lost art Original
PITTSBURGH — This NHL offseason has been dominated by players wanting a change of address. Brady Tkachuk wanted to play in Florida and got his wish. Dylan Larkin wants to depart Detroit. We’ll see whether he gets his way. Zach Werenski seemed to flirt with leaving Columbus before deciding to stay in Ohio. For now, anyway. The Jason Robertson saga is ongoing. The Leo Carlsson situation is capturing the attention of hockey fans — and general managers — everywhere.
Penguins sign Egor Chinakhov to 3-year deal with $6.25 million AAV
The Pittsburgh Penguins signed winger Egor Chinakhov to a three-year deal with an average annual value of $6.25 million, the team announced Sunday. Acquired in a midseason trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets last December, the 25-year-old forward is now committed to the franchise through the 2028-29 season after he scored 18 goals and 36 points for the Penguins in 43 games. This story will be updated. Never miss a single moment.

As Penguins open free agency, is Jason Robertson still a possibility?: 10 observations
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Penguins’ plan remains a little difficult to understand. Management has repeatedly said it’d like the Penguins to get younger and, while that has generally been the case over the past year, Wednesday’s opening of NHL unrestricted free agency didn’t move the team in that direction. Then again, that is the nature of making moves on July 1. Generally, older players are available on the open market.
Defenseman Ryan Shea leaves Penguins, signs with Oilers on 5-year contract Original
The Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t want to lose steady defenseman Ryan Shea, but they weren’t interested in a bidding war for the 29-year-old defenseman. His new team didn’t mind giving Shea a substantial payday. Shea and the Edmonton Oilers agreed to a five-year, $20 million contract on Wednesday, the team announced. A native of Milton, Mass., Shea is a late bloomer who proved himself a vital part of the Penguins’ blue line over the past couple of seasons.
Penguins sign forward Andrei Kuzmenko to 1-year contract
The Pittsburgh Penguins have replaced Anthony Mantha. One season after signing Mantha to a show-me contract, the Penguins opted to let him hit free agency and signed another talented forward, Andrei Kuzmenko, who most recently played for the Los Angeles Kings. The Penguins and the 30-year-old Kuzmenko agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
Stuart Skinner signs 2-year contract with Jets: What could it mean for Connor Hellebuyck?
Stuart Skinner is joining his third team in the past few months. After being traded from his hometown Edmonton Oilers to the Pittsburgh Penguins in December, Skinner has signed a two-year, $3.75 million AAV deal with the Winnipeg Jets, the team announced Wednesday. The Penguins had interest in retaining the 27-year-old goaltender, but given their wealth of young goaltending, they didn’t feel comfortable offering Skinner a long-term contract.
Maple Leafs trade Nick Robertson to Penguins Original
The Nick Robertson era is finally over in Toronto. The Maple Leafs sent Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2028, the teams announced Wednesday. The trade reunites Robertson with Kyle Dubas, the GM who drafted him with the Leafs in the second round of the 2019 draft. Debuting for the Leafs in the 2020 playoffs, Robertson had a bumpy time with the franchise, never quite finding the role and opportunity he sought.
What I’m hearing about the Penguins, Jason Robertson, free agency and NHL schedule
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Rumors have been flying in recent days about Jason Robertson and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Several team sources, speaking under the condition of anonymity to address private information, told me president/GM Kyle Dubas has discussed a potential deal with the Dallas Stars. I reported last season that Dubas possessed a keen interest in Robertson, the 26-year-old forward whom Dubas views as one of hockey’s best pure goal scorers. Dubas has long wanted to acquire Robertson.

Penguins trade Parker Wotherspoon to Golden Knights for Kaedan Korczak Original
The Pittsburgh Penguins made a fairly surprising trade Tuesday afternoon. Parker Wotherspoon, among the Penguins’ most dependable players last season, was dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights. In return, the Penguins are receiving Kaedan Korczak, a 25-year-old defenseman who was a regular in Vegas’ lineup for most of last season. The Penguins are retaining half of Wotherspoon’s salary. He earns $1 million annually and is entering the final season of his contract.
Kyle Dubas handled draft week very well, but a dose of reality has hit the Penguins Original
PITTSBURGH — Kyle Dubas met with the media following the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft and, as per usual, made a lot of sense. Pittsburgh Penguins officials love when Dubas speaks publicly because he’s really good at it. When he speaks, it immediately becomes clear that this is a highly intelligent executive who very much knows what he’s doing and very much has the franchise headed in the right direction.
Kyle Dubas badly wanted to make a move but didn’t have the assets to pull it off
PITTSBURGH — The rest of the Eastern Conference keeps getting better. Though the Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t done anything wrong in recent days, they haven’t really done anything. And that’s OK. Imprudent decisions this time of year can stymie a franchise for a long time. There’s nothing wrong with being patient and not buying in what became a seller’s market. Kyle Dubas wanted to add talented young players to the Penguins’ roster.

Hoffmann family makes very good first impression: ‘You will win in Pittsburgh’ Original
PITTSBURGH — As first impressions go, the Hoffmann family went top shelf Thursday at the new owners’ introductory news conference at PPG Paints Arena. They talked a big game without coming across as arrogant or filled with bravado, they opened the door for Mario Lemieux to join them, and they made it clear that they intend on investing in the Penguins — and Pittsburgh — for generations to come. Here are 10 observations from a significant day in Penguins history.
Which trade candidates make the most sense for the Penguins? Original
PITTSBURGH — A flurry of trades has stunned the NHL this week. Amazingly enough, several big names are still expected to be traded between now and early July. We haven’t seen anything like this in quite some time. Pittsburgh Penguins general manager and president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas has stated on numerous occasions that he wants to make trades to replenish the team’s roster. He’s playing the short game and the long game.
Penguins, Kyle Dubas quiet during flurry of NHL moves: Is this the calm before the storm?
PITTSBURGH — A volcano of deals erupted around the NHL on Tuesday, started a couple of days earlier by Sunday’s Brady Tkachuk trade. Everyone seems to be getting in on the seismic moves. The Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks, New Jersey Devils, Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Seattle Kraken have all made splashes within the last week. That’s more than one-third of the NHL.
Fenway Sports Group wasn’t perfect, but it left the Penguins in a very good position
PITTSBURGH — Following a volatile day around the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins find themselves eagerly wanting to enter the trade party. But in the bigger picture, whether Kyle Dubas is able to strike franchise-altering deals or not this week, the Penguins are in a pretty stable place. Their departing owners deserve some credit. It’s not fashionable in these parts to be complimentary of the Fenway Sports Group. I’ve been critical of the group a time or two myself.

NHL owners approve Penguins sale from FSG to Hoffmann family ownership
After a several-month wait, the Hoffmann family has cleared the biggest hurdle to becoming the new owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. While the news of the family’s interest in buying the team from its previous owner, Fenway Sports Group, became public almost a year ago and a sale was agreed upon in December, the deal wasn’t approved by the league until Tuesday’s NHL Board of Governors meeting in New York.

Penguins draft and trade plans: What I’m hearing Original
PITTSBURGH — The NHL Draft begins in a matter of days and the Penguins are in an interesting spot. They aren’t in win-now mode, nor are they in a complete rebuild, having made the postseason in April and hoping to be even better next season. Of course, they’re also looking to make their roster younger on the fly while adding to their growing system. In short, GM Kyle Dubas is trying to accomplish a number of conflicting goals simultaneously.
Penguins name franchise legend Ron Francis as special advisor of hockey operations Original
PITTSBURGH – Ron Francis and the Penguins have always been a perfect match. Francis, a Hockey Hall of Famer and one of the greatest players in franchise history, has returned to Pittsburgh as a special advisor for hockey operations. The Penguins announced the news Friday. “Ron has a deep affinity for the city of Pittsburgh and the Penguins.
Penguins trade tiers: Most and least likely Pittsburgh players to be dealt this offseason
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins have been blessed with several great general managers over the years, and many of them have been trade-happy by nature. Craig Patrick, Ray Shero and Jim Rutherford weren’t just good; they also rarely met a deal they didn’t like. Kyle Dubas falls into the same category. Dubas has executed 44 trades since taking control of the Penguins three years ago, more than one per month. He’s traded 42 players and acquired 42. He’s traded 20 draft picks and acquired 33.

What I’m hearing about the Penguins: Eyes on Rust, Rakell, Letang as trade season nears Original
PITTSBURGH — For all the attention the NHL trade deadline understandably receives, the most fertile time for transactions is on the horizon. The six days between the beginning of the NHL Draft and unrestricted free agency have become the launching ground for significant movement around the league. And make no mistake, the Pittsburgh Penguins are looking to make moves.
Which Penguins team is the best ever? When will Kyle Dubas swing a big trade? Mailbag Original
Thanks for all the questions. They were terrific, as always. And the first question appeals to my childhood, which I always love. Who wins in this tournament of the greatest Penguins teams? No. 1 seed: 1992-93 Penguins vs. No. 8 seed: 2013-14 Penguins No. 4 seed: 2008-09 Penguins vs. No. 5 seed: 2015-16 Penguins No. 6 seed: 2011-12 Penguins vs. No. 3 seed: 1991-92 Penguins No. 2 seed: 2016-17 Penguins vs.
What will the Penguins’ 2026-27 roster look like? What will Dubas add?: Mailbag
Welcome to my first June mailbag. The next few weeks are about to get busy with the NHL Draft, free agency, the schedule release and all kinds of other news. So, let’s roll with a couple of mailbags this week. Here’s Part 1, which begins with an impossible question. But that’s part of the fun. What is your best guess as to the opening night lineup, leaving blank spots for FA/trade acquisitions?

In Sergei Murashov, the Penguins have a soon-to-be star for the long-term future Original
PITTSBURGH — Everyone has a theory about where the Pittsburgh Penguins should go from here. There’s the “full rebuild” crowd. There’s the “go for it now for Sid and Geno” crowd. There’s the “keep doing what you’ve been doing during the past two years and see what happens” crowd. Six or seven other paths have developed some steam as the Penguins try mightily to remove themselves from the mushy middle. And make no mistake, that’s where they are.
Hurricanes’ Jordan Staal, traded by Penguins 14 years ago, is king of the long game
PITTSBURGH — If you were there, you can still hear the noise. Around 9 p.m. on June 22, 2012, commissioner Gary Bettman walked to the lectern at the NHL Draft at PPG Paints Arena, back when it was Consol Energy Center, and announced that the Pittsburgh Penguins had traded Jordan Staal.

Harrison Brunicke is taking some dramatic strides for the Wilkes-Barre Penguins
TORONTO — Harrison Brunicke has been everywhere this season. He started in October with the Pittsburgh Penguins, having made the NHL roster at 19. After a rough patch and several healthy scratches, Brunicke was sent to Minneapolis so he could play for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships. Then it was back to the Western Hockey League, where he played 24 regular-season games and four postseason games for Kamloops. It appears he’s right where he belongs.

What I’m seeing from the Penguins’ AHL postseason run: Grit, resolve and togetherness
TORONTO — About 40 minutes had elapsed since the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins’ gritty, Game 4 victory Wednesday at the Coca-Cola Coliseum evened their best-of-seven conference final against the Toronto Marlies. Members of the Penguins’ AHL affiliate had concluded their postgame routines, but, instead of taking a shower and heading back to the team hotel, most of them were sitting around in folding chairs outside of their locker room in a makeshift workout room.

Penguins’ new owners, the Hoffmanns, would like to involve Mario Lemieux
PITTSBURGH — June has arrived, and Fenway Sports Group still owns the Pittsburgh Penguins — though likely not for long. In April, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said that financial transactions, such as FSG’s sale of the Penguins to the Hoffmann family, agreed upon in December, can take a long time to wrap up. Sources within the Penguins organization remain confident that the transfer of power from FSG, which bought the team in 2021, to the Hoffmanns will happen sooner rather than later.

Konsta Helenius lifts Finland to IIHF World Championship victory with OT golden goal Original
For the second year in a row, a member of the Buffalo Sabres ended the IIHF World Championship in overtime. Konsta Helenius ended a scoreless gridlock that lasted more than 70 minutes, scoring in overtime to deliver Finland the gold medal in a 1-0 victory against host Switzerland on Sunday. The loss was an agonizing one for Switzerland, an emerging hockey power that was the most dominant team during the 17-day tournament.
Canada eliminated by Finland in semifinals at men’s hockey World Championship Original
The IIHF World Championship is not the Olympics, but some of Canada’s stars were hoping to wash out the bad taste in their mouths from three months ago. A dominant second period lifted Finland to a 4-2 victory against Canada in the semifinal round of the World Championship in Zurich, Switzerland, on Saturday. Finland outshot Canada 29-21 and snuffed both of Canada’s power plays.
How Kyle Dubas fixed the Penguins, and the difficult road back to the Stanley Cup Original
PITTSBURGH — Monday is a landmark date in Pittsburgh Penguins history. On June 1, 1992 — 34 years ago — the greatest Penguins team ever won its 11th consecutive postseason game to finish off the Chicago Blackhawks in a sweep and win back-to-back championships. Monday also marks the third anniversary of the day the Penguins introduced Kyle Dubas as the man to guide their organization. That day, he probably felt like the Penguins were 34 years away from winning the Stanley Cup. What about now?
Sidney Crosby sees his own fire in Macklin Celebrini, Canada’s future Original
FRIBOURG, Switzerland — When Sidney Crosby arrived in Switzerland a couple of weeks ago as a late but welcome addition to Team Canada’s roster at the IIHF World Championship, the coaching staff asked whom he wished to skate with at the two-week tournament. It was a very short conversation. He chose the captain.
