When I Grow Up

 “The most interesting people I’ve met don’t know what they want to be when they grow up, until the age of about 50.” Words to that effect were written by A.S. Neill in his seminal book, Summerhill.

 From a very young age (9-ish, maybe) I saw myself as a poet. In my teens and early 20’s in Chicago I made poems (all the while working at “jobs” to support myself). I hung out with poets, took poetry workshops with Pulitzer Prize winner Gwendolyn Brooks at Columbia Col…

What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote a column for my eighth grade newspaper. My first paid job as a journalist was at Variety, in the Chicago bureau. I did in-house reporting - the weekly picture grosses. Also "sweated" press releases.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I'm that old. My first typewriter was a big ol' hand-me-down Royal desk model from my dad's office. After that, I used IBM Selectrics.

How is social media changing news?

Bonnie Chastain was a TV broadcasting pioneer and graduate of CSM, class of 1972. This award was an incredible honor and the amount awarded was twice the usual amount.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Academic Standing - 3.5 gpa required for induction. 3.2 gpa required for continuing membership.

Howard Immekus Memorial Scholarship

2015 - For digital media student, based on scholarship and need.

Howard Immekus, the director of technical operations of radio station KCBS in San Francisco. Bay Area Broadcast Engineers give the award in Immekus' memory. I received it two consecutive school years, 2014-2016.
