Filipino nuns didn't seek activist labels. They still became forces for justice.
As sisters in the Philippines were led to detention or prison for protesting and advocating for justice during the Marcos era of 1972-1986, a thought persisted: "What should I be doing as a follower of Christ? Belief in Christ is not enough.
Q&A with Sr. Edith Olaguer on living through six days of war in Dubai
Contemplative Good Shepherd Sr. Edith Olaguer went to the Philippines in February to visit her family. Her return to Rome included a scheduled layover in Dubai. On her return flight Feb. 28, the Dubai International Airport was bombed. Having no access to news overnight, she had no idea why the pilot announced a diversion for landing the morning of March 1. The plane ultimately did land as scheduled but Olaguer found herself in a nightmare of chaotic events.
Annunciation of Mary can be a time to reflect on mystical moments of God
Karl Rahner believed that we are all called to be mystics, experiencing union with God in daily life. This challenges the idea that mystical experiences only come in quiet spaces of prayer and contemplation. I began pondering this in Mary's life as we celebrate her Annunciation experience.
Find joy in being called to daily witness to God's presence
The World Day for Consecrated Life and the feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple fall on the same day. I'm interested in three stories of the scriptural event: the cleansing ritual of Mary, the presentation of Jesus, and Anna's part in this event. Mary's need for cleansing was a traditional ritual after a woman had given birth or had been menstruating. During this time, a woman was considered "unclean" because of the loss of life force, or blood. She was no longer spiritually whole.

Q&A with Lucy Huh, studying adult victims, including sisters, of clergy abuse
This summer, the subject of various types of abuse of Catholic sisters rose to importance, with two conferences focusing on the issue. One conference, held in Rome, was sponsored by a collaboration of the U.S.-based Conrad H. Hilton Foundation (a major funder of Global Sisters Report) and the German Missio Foundation.
Joy is a necessary ingredient to change the injustices in our world
A friend of mine from Los Angeles had taken part in the June 14 "No Kings" protest, and she told me about one experience she had being in a group that brought a band to join the protest. The band inclusion had two goals: One was to keep the group spirit up, and the other was to counter groups wanting to disrupt the protest.
Is It Time for a Security Check?
Today, insecurity is an epidemic. Too many people, including many Christians, walk around timid, afraid, lacking confidence and feeling bad about themselves. But when Jesus died on the cross for us, something happened that I like to call “the divine exchange.” He took away our sins and everything we are not, and then He made us perfect in Him. God wants you to be confident, bold, fearless and free. He wants you to be healthy and whole, fully able to pursue your destiny.
How does a sister's apostolic vocation change when aging slows her activity?
In February this year, I had the opportunity to attend a fascinating webinar by Catherine Sexton, who was presenting research from her book, Becoming Apostolic: Conversations With Older Roman Catholic Sisters. Unlike contemplative orders, apostolic congregations or communities are characterized by their active service and ministries — a challenge for sisters who find themselves too old to be able to carry out works that once marked their religious life.
UISG assembly: Sisters in conflict zones display power of solidarity, fragility
At the general assembly for the International Union of Superiors General (May 5-9 in Rome), one of the most moving and gut-wrenching moments for me was a session that began with questions. "Who of you here are working in conflict or war areas of the world? Please stand and remain standing." We looked around the room and saw women of courage and deep empathy rise. "Who of you have sisters working in conflict or war areas?
UISG assembly: Synodal signs of hope for women religious, future of church
When we first signed up for the International Union of General Superiors assembly several months ago, nobody expected that we would be there at the same time as the conclave to elect a new pope. However, following Pope Francis' sudden death, most of us came to the May 5-9 gathering in Rome with anticipation (some, with anxiety) about who the new pope would be.
I'll never get tired of wondering
This realization evoked a sense of wonder and awe in us. It also raised a question within. Like this forest flame tree, would we invite transitions in our life with this same sense of wonder? Nature does not resist these transitions, but many times we humans do resist these so-called processes of decay and dying in ourselves. One area wherein we find ourselves vulnerable and resentful is the phase of aging.
I'll never get tired of wondering
Years ago, while I worked with the tribal people in one of the interior villages of India organizing various social programs for women and children, I noticed the behavioral patterns of the children of those areas.

The Good Shepherd
Once when I was doing a study of the 23rd Psalm, I read a book about shepherds. In it I learned a lot about the special relationship between a shepherd and his sheep. A shepherd is a manager and a caretaker. He is the owner of his sheep…and he loves them. One thing I learned is that a shepherd marks his sheep with an instrument called a “killing knife.” Now, it may not sound very loving, but understand that sheep do not instinctively take care of themselves.

Find Real Freedom by Embracing Real Truth
God loves you and He has an amazing plan for your life. He wants you to be happy and He wants to bless you, but there’s so much more to His plans and purposes for you than that. First and foremost, God wants a personal relationship with each of us. And He wants us to partner with Him in sharing His love and the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those who don’t know Him. He wants us to care about them, to pray for them and to show them His love and what it means to really be a Christian.

Understanding who the church is in a five-day Vatican pilgrimage
Words take on flesh during site visits. This was my experience for five days as a board member for the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation when I visited the Union of International Superiors General in Rome and several Vatican departments, called dicasteries. As board members, we read the names of project leaders — even had them join us as panel guests at times — and descriptions of their projects that provide information for us to make funding decisions.

Undercount: why the Catholic church won't list many New Mexico priests who've been linked to sexual abuse
When the Archdiocese of Santa Fe filed for bankruptcy on Dec. 3, 2018, church officials said they were dangerously close to burning through their financial reserves after settling lawsuits with nearly 300 survivors of sexual abuse that occurred in this huge religious district, which encompasses 19 counties in central and northeastern New Mexico and the cities of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Taos.

Sister lawyers - canonical or civil - bring unique perspectives to role
Sisters are lawyers? That was the question I heard one day speaking to someone about the variety of sisters' ministries. I wonder how many other people would also be surprised. Yes, sisters are both civil and canon lawyers, not only in the United States but in countries all over the world. I never realized how many there are until recently when I began researching their presence. I personally became aware of this ministry for sisters in the late 1980s when I was in congregational leadership.
