Best Minivans of 2024 - Car Talk
The best minivans of 2024 offer practicality, convenience and, dare we say it, even a dash of luxury. Buying a minivan declares that you are a practical person who puts function first, so we’re not surprised your minivan research has landed you on our list of the best minivans for 2024. How we made our picks To create this list, the dopes here at Car Talk tested each minivan currently on the market. We threw kids, luggage and dogs in them. We commuted in them.
Best Trucks of 2024 - Car Talk
Trucks used to be simple. Two doors, a bed and maybe a two-tone paint job. Now there are luxury trucks, hybrid trucks, all-electric trucks, off-road racing trucks and pickup trucks so small your friends won’t ask you to help them move... We strongly recommend those trucks. Overall, the best truck is one that has the capability you need, combined with the comfort and driveability to fit into your everyday life. There are a lot of trucks on the market that are very capable, but also very, very large.
These Are the Best Rental Cars for 2024
Credit Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.| Rent a Car That's Memorable for All the Right Reasons A rental car can save the day if you have family visiting and need a vehicle with more passenger capacity than your two-door coupe provides. Renting a car is also handy if you're on vacation and want to explore the local sights. Advertisement It's worth thoroughly weighing your options.
Should I Get an Auto Loan From a Credit Union?
When you're in the market for a new or used car loan, the odds are good you'll see credit unions advertising to get your business. Many people don't even know what a credit union is, let alone that they can use one to get a car loan. While credit union membership was once somewhat limited, today nearly every American qualifies to become a credit union member. Your town probably has at least one credit union, as do most colleges, large companies and military bases.
Is It Bad if Your Brake Pedal Goes to the Floor?
It certainly feels bad when your brake pedal goes all the way to the floor, but is it really all that terrible? In a word, yes. Exactly how bad is a matter for discussion – a discussion you really need to have with a reputable mechanic. Even if your car is still stopping fine, this problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible. One of the more common causes for the brake pedal going to the floor is a loss of brake fluid. When you're out of brake fluid, your brakes simply won't work.
Ford Explorer vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee: Head to Head
Credit Ford Motor Company | Stellantis Ford Explorer vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee: Which Is Better? Midsize SUVs remain one of the most popular categories with shoppers, and for a lot of good reasons. It’s hard to beat their combination of interior room, versatility, and the security of four- or all-wheel drive. Plus, they’re all packaged in a size that’s big enough for families yet easy enough to maneuver and fit into most garages.
Is Your Car a Republican or Democrat?
MacrocosmPhotography / Getty Images You know better than to discuss politics with coworkers or people you just met, right? So if you want to figure out how someone is likely to vote this November, you may try guessing based on their clothes (Brooks Brothers versus Birkenstocks), hair (high and tight vs. Hillary's Helmet) or Starbuck's order (black coffee vs. fair-trade low fat mocha soy latte). As it turns out, what they drive could also hint at their political leanings.
Work, Food, School: Everything You Need to Know About Staying Home During COVID-19
U.S. News takes an unbiased approach to our recommendations. When you use our links to buy products, we may earn a commission but that in no way affects our editorial independence. Key ways to make the most of staying at home: On the surface, social distancing due to the coronavirus seems straightforward enough: work from your couch, spend some quality time with your family and take a few extra walks with your dog. The reality, as many Americans are finding out, is a lot tougher.
10 Good Beginner Motorcycles
It's a scientific fact (seriously, where's my Nobel Prize for discovering this?) that you'll never look cooler than you do when you sit on a motorcycle. This was verified by Marlon Brando, James Dean, Dennis Hopper and Arnold Schwarzenegger. In addition to making you look bad to the bone, riding a motorcycle gives you a visceral connection to the road. That translates into plenty of thrills.
10 Tips for Buying a Used Motorcycle
If you ride a motorcycle, you're OK with taking on more risk than the average Joe Schmoe who spends his days behind the doors of his sensible midsize car. Buying a used motorcycle, however, can expose you to more risk than even the hardiest two-wheeled warrior is willing to take on. When you buy a new motorcycle, you're protected by a warranty and the fact that the bike is new – no one has messed with it and all the parts are in pristine condition.
Should I Get an Auto Loan From a Credit Union?
As you look for a car loan, the odds are good you’ve seen credit unions interested in your business. Your town probably has its own credit union, as do most colleges, and even some large companies. There are credit unions for people who work at hospitals, credit unions for people who work in various government agencies, and credit unions for teachers. There are more than 5,600 federally insured credit unions in the U.S. looking to get your business.
10 Extreme Motor Sports for Thrill Seekers
Advertisement Sometimes, as the great B.B. King said, "the thrill is gone." Sure, you loved your car when you first got it, but using it for commuting and running errands can quickly make you feel like you've gone from finding your groove to being in a rut. While you're sitting in traffic, it's easy to wonder if the boredom of inching along and staring at brake lights is all there is.
10 Abandoned Racetracks
When you think about it, a racetrack only has one purpose: to be driven around as fast as possible. The surrounding structures, like the grandstands, restrooms, pit buildings and concession stands, don't have a lot of other uses either. Unlike an old big-box store, office building or school, when a racetrack is past its useful life, it can be hard to repurpose. Repurposing a site so large is expensive and creates environmental concerns.
Can carbon fiber solve the oil crisis?
Before you can understand how carbon fiber can help solve the oil crisis, you have to understand what it is. Carbon fiber is a super strong material that's also extremely lightweight. Engineers and designers love it because it's five times as strong as steel, two times as stiff, yet weighs about two-thirds less. Carbon fiber is basically very thin strands of carbon -- even thinner than human hair. The strands can be twisted together, like yarn. The yarns can be woven together, like cloth.
Average Auto Loan Rates in February 2020
There’s no doubt that buying a car is expensive. The average price of a new car is more than $36,000, and a used car costs more than $20,000 on average. However, for many buyers, a car’s price doesn’t tell the entire story about what it costs to buy it. Because most people take out a loan to buy a car, the interest rate on their auto loan drives the final cost of the car up. In fact, an auto loan’s interest rate is usually the second most expensive part of buying a car.
Are Electric Cars Cheaper to Run?
This post, part of a series we're running all about electric cars, was written by Jamie Page Deaton from HowStuffWorks.com. So you've done everything you can think of: You've checked your tire pressure, carpooled, telecommuted -- maybe you even bought a hybrid. But you can't shake that nagging feeling that you're car is still polluting the atmosphere more than you'd like.

2019 Best Cars for Families
You’ve probably seen plenty of ads where a smiling family happily zips along in a new car with space for everyone and lots of handy features. Though car companies brag about models that have over a dozen cup holders, easy-to-clean upholstery, connectivity for everyone’s devices, and third-row seats that are as comfortable as a recliner, reality doesn’t always live up to the hype.
The Best Compact SUVs for Resale Value
The Honda CR-V holds on to half its value over 5 years. (American Honda Motor Co., Inc.) Small SUVs and crossovers are extremely popular. According to data from Edmunds.com, compact SUVs have twice the share of the new car market that they had a decade ago, and are now the fourth most popular type of vehicle (midsize cars, small cars and pickup trucks are more popular).

2019 Best Cars for the Money
We’ve all been there. You need a new car, but you’re not really sure what you want. You see a new model on the street, and it seems perfect. It looks good, has plenty of space, and from the way the engine sounds, seems to have plenty of power. You pull out your phone, search for your new dream car and get slapped with a cold dose of reality: There’s no way you can afford it.
2018 Best Cars for Families
Just because a vehicle is marketed as a family car or SUV doesn’t mean it’s actually a good choice for your family. At U.S. News, we’ve tested plenty of “family SUVs” that didn’t have a place to stash fruit snacks or juice boxes, lacked rear seat space, or had terrible crash test scores and non-existent active safety features. Our Best Cars for Families awards highlight the cars, SUVs, and, yes, minivans that have what it takes to make family life easier and more pleasant.

2018 Best Cars for the Money

Best Car Features for Caregivers
Caring for others often means traveling with a lot of stuff. Make things easy on yourself by getting a vehicle that has room for it all, and that lets you load and unload easily. Those remote-control doors and tailgates let you keep your hands free to not only help your passengers but also to tuck their gear aboard. Ford crossovers let you swipe your foot under the back bumper to open the tailgate if your hands are full, a feature migrating to other brands.

Life with a Diabetic Dog
Last March, we noticed someone (probably a dog, maybe Chris) was peeing on the floor overnight. We’d come downstairs in the morning to find a veritable lake Titicaca in the dining room. Based on the size of the urine output, we assumed the culprit was Gunny and got a full round of bloodwork for him.
Have crash tests ever used live (or dead) human occupants?
Some days, you go into work and just get slammed. For most people, that's just a figure of speech. But for a select few professions, like linebackers, pro wrestlers and crash test dummies, getting slammed is part of the job -- literally. Now, you're probably thinking it sounds silly to propose that inanimate objects, like crash test dummies, are employed.

Pre-School Wonder Woman Costume
Growing up, I wasn’t a big Wonder Woman fan. My older sister, however, was. She had a way of convincing me that watching Wonder Woman instead of The Dukes of Hazzard was a good idea (her favorite way to convince me was punching me repeatedly), so I watched a lot of Linda Carter growing up. There’s a channel up here that shows the old Wonder Woman, and this past spring I sat down with Chris to see how well the show has aged.
Death Stalks Us All, But Hey! PIE!
It seems the cold hand of death still hovers over the Shaker House™ (no, it’s not really trademarked I just learned how to make the symbol this week and wanted to use it). Right when I stopped contemplating why we had to lose a loving dog who was full of joy and flatulence, while the chickens, who have nothing to offer but rage and empty ovaries (they’ve all gone through menopause, so they’re basically freeloading, eggless, tiny feathered dinosaurs) all mange to solider on, death stepped in.
A Visit to the Southern Living Idea House
I’m not what you would call “highly cultured.” I don’t want to talk about big ideas and current events; I want to talk about poop.
Things I Cannot Recommend: Kitchen Edition
It’s a strange thing: if you want to feel loved, lose someone close to you. I’m not saying you should go out and murder your family, but when you lose someone. people will come out of the woodwork with support, and the hole in your heart can get filled with the outpouring of love from those you have left. Thanks, everyone, for being so nice about Gunny’s passing. it’s easy to minimize things, to note that he was “just” a dog, but he was our dog, and we miss him.
The Master of Leaning In
Since this is ostensibly a house blog (“house” is in the title and everything!) I’m going to tell you about the first night I spent in this house. The day before we were set to make our big move here, Chris and I took a load of stuff from our old house to this one. I can’t for the life of me remember why, but we decided it would be easier for Evie and me to spend the night here, while Chris went back to the old house. In the morning, it would be my job to bring donuts for the guys helping us move.
Gimme That Wood, You Stud.
I got a big load of wood last week, if you know what I mean, wink wink. I didn’t take pictures when I took delivery of that massive amount of wood, mainly because this is a family blog and also because I was on a conference call at the time –kinky!– but I don’t think you need to see a weathered workman back a dump truck into the driveway and drop 8 feet by 8 feet by 4 feet of wood. Yup, we had a cord of wood delivered.
Make Ice Cream for Your Family
It’s that special time of year when I start every blog post with “It’s that special time of year.” Let’s be honest, though — I post so infrequently that every time I post it’s a special time of year. My blog posts are like your 401(k) statement: they show up once a quarter and the contents are usually a bit of a letdown. Like approximately 99.98% of women in the U.S., I am trying to lose the last 20 pounds. I could blame this extra weight on my kids, but at this point, it’s all me. And cheetos.
IIHS LATCH Ratings Aim to Make Installing Car Seats Easier
Once you’ve found the right car seat for your child, you need to install it. Installing a child safety seat is harder than you might think. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that almost half of all car seats are installed incorrectly. One way to help make sure your child’s car safety seat is installed correctly is to use the vehicle’s Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system.
Measuring Distance and Time
To put it simply, taxi meters measure distance and time. They then convert those measurements into a fare. Taxi fares are set by the area the taxi cab operates in -- in other words, it might cost more to travel the same distance or time in one city than it does in another. Fares may also change based on how many people are in the taxi, if the driver has to help you with your bags and if the taxi has to cross state or municipal lines to get you where you're going.

Should you underinflate your tires in winter?
Snow tires, all-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, bags of kitty litter in the trunk — people will do just about anything to gain an edge when driving in snowy, icy winter weather. For the most part, these strategies are good ideas. After all, winter-slick roads raise the risk of having an accident, and the best way to survive a car accident is to prevent one from happening in the first place. One winter driving trick that some people swear by is underinflating their tires.
Why the Ford Edsel Failed
Shop for a car today and you'll likely find one that feels like it was made just for you. Want the high seating position of an SUV but the footprint of a compact car? Check out a subcompact SUV like the Honda HR-V. Want good fuel economy and unbridled luxury? Luxury hybrids like the Lexus RX 450h are there for you. Want to go off-road in your convertible? The Jeep Wrangler lets you put the top down no matter how rough the trail is.
Will using a cell phone at a gas pump make it explode?
For this article, we're going to work from the assumption that you don't want to cause an explosion and fire at a gas station, sending the whole structure and all of its patrons up in a cloud of smoke, lottery tickets, windshield-washer fluid and Funyuns. So, if you don't want to cause an explosion or start a fire at a gas station, you should keep your trusty cell phone holstered, right?
Did Henry Ford invent the car?
There's perhaps no single person more associated with the automobile than Henry Ford. Ford is credited with bringing the car to the masses, which transformed driving from a pastime for the rich into an integral part of daily life for millions of people.
Can airbags kill you?
The whole premise of an airbag just sounds good, doesn't it? Instead of colliding with your car's steering wheel, dashboard or door, you get cushioned by a pillow of air. While airbags aren't exactly as cuddly-soft as a bear in a toilet paper commercial, making contact with one sure beats making contact with a steel panel. Since 1998, front driver and passenger airbags have been required equipment in all cars and trucks sold in the United States.
