A native Washingtonian, Jason Samenow has been a weather enthusiast since age 10 (1987). At the University of Virginia, he earned a degree in environmental science, focusing in atmospheric science. He went on to earn a master’s degree in atmospheric science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000. Jason is currently the Washington Post’s weather editor.

The DC area is experiencing some of its worst particle pollution on record Friday, as smoke from Canadian wildfires streaks across the region. Wildfire smoke invades DC area with some of the worst air quality on record

The promised wildfire smoke invasion occurred overnight in the wake of a cold front, and the DC area awoke Friday to widespread very unhealthy (code purple) to hazardous (code maroon) air quality. An acrid, woody/rubbery smoke smell hits as soon as you step outside. According to monitoring site IQAir, DC had the third-worst air quality of major cities across the world around sunrise, behind Detroit and Chicago. The top five also included Toronto and New York City.

A thick plume of wildfire smoke is poised to surge into the DC area late tonight into Friday, bringing the worst air quality in years. The Maryland Department of the Environment is forecasting code red air quality across the entire state, signifying unhealthy levels of smoke pollution. Air quality is expected to be similarly compromised in DC and Northern Virginia.
