Indigenous Australians suffer disproportionately from vision loss. However, direct comparisons of the prevalence and treatment coverage of cataract between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians are lacking. Indigenous Australians have a higher pooled prevalence of bilateral vision loss (3.6% vs 1.1%, p=0.011) and bilateral blindness (0.385% vs 0.001%, p=0.002) from cataract coupled with lower cataract surgery coverage (68.0% vs 88.4%, p=0.004).
