After several years of planning and hard work, Southern Research is ready to open a massive new biotech center. The company put up $98 million to build the 150,000-square-foot facility. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports 41 people across the country have gone to the emergency room after being bitten by a tick; that's the highest number since 2019. Alabama has a large tick population, but the most common types of ticks are the blacklegged deer tick, American dogwood tick, and lone star tick.

Jefferson County Schools "Majority to Minority" program begins
As students head back to class, the Jefferson County School System is implementing a new program designed to give students more options when it comes to their education. The "Majority to Minority Program" allows students to transfer to a school where they are the racial minority. If a Black, white, or Hispanic student goes to a school where their race is the majority, they can transfer to a school where it isn't.

Birmingham barbershop giving out 200 free haircuts on Saturday
The first day of school is less than a week away, and a Birmingham barber shop is making sure kids across our area head back to class looking their best. This Saturday, Birmingham House of Cuts will be doing 200 haircuts for free, as well as giving out school supplies, backpacks and a warm meal. Owner Jimmy Shallow says this is a pretty big step up compared to the usual 20-30 heads they cut as students head back to school. "It's a leap of faith.
ALEA to hand over Jabari Peoples body camera footage soon
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is expected to finish its investigation of the shooting death of 18-year-old Jabari Peoples by a Homewood police officer and release the bodycam footage by Friday afternoon. It has been more than a month since the 18-year-old was shot and killed by a Homewood police officer. The officer says Peoples grabbed a gun, but his girlfriend maintains he was unarmed. Peoples' mother filed a lawsuit petitioning for body cam footage of his death to be released.
Teen killed in Collegeville housing community
Birmingham Police are looking for the person who shot and killed a 17-year-old boy late Thursday night. They say it happened at the Collegeville housing community 29th Avenue North around 11:30 p.m., the teen died at the scene. "We believe numerous shots were fired outside of the apartment into a nearby vehicle and into the apartment the victim was discovered in," said Public Information Officer Truman Fitzgerald. At this time, it is unclear if the teen was shot outside or inside the apartment.
Classroom construction underway at several Shelby County schools
Students in Shelby County will return to class on Aug. 7, and many high schools will soon have new classrooms to learn in. Several extensions are being built at Shelby County Schools, but they'll take about a year to be built. At Helena High School, 10 classrooms would be added to the school once construction is complete. The goal is to keep more kids inside the school building instead of in portable classrooms.

The digital detox is designed to help students cut down on their screen time and dependency on their phones before school starts. Martha Gaskins Early Learning Annex ready to open
Birmingham City School students are returning to the classroom soon, and one elementary school is helping their smallest scholars get prepared for school. The Martha Gaskins Early Learning Annex is in its final preps for the upcoming school year. Nearly 300 students are expected to fill the classrooms in this additional building. Principal Herbert Blackmon Jr. believes this will provide preschoolers the opportunity to develop reading, math and other skills ahead of elementary school.
Optometrists urge parents to get their child's vision checked before school year begins
Parents are getting their kids ready for the first day of school, and pediatric eye doctors say eye-exams should also be a priority. Nearly 80% of a child's learning is done with their eyes according to UAB eye doctors. Not being able to see well could impact how well your child does in school this year. It may cause difficulty reading which, of course, could lead to learning delays and other issues.
Birmingham firefighters investigating funeral home fire

Jefferson County Schools seeks more substitute teachers
The Jefferson County School district is working to address its substitute shortage. Their goal is to hire at least 30 substitutes and take some pressure off of full-time teachers. The district is teaming up with Kelly Education to bring more teachers on board. The company says that due to the shortage, teachers can't take time off or have to cover more than one class when a teacher does take off or need help with coverage for their original classroom.

Shelby County Schools launches "Shelby 101" Program

Forty people will be selected to attend six sessions over the 2025-2026 school year. Demonstrators threaten economic boycott over Jabari Peoples case
Protesters are ramping up their calls for answers in the shooting that killed 18-year-old Jabari Peoples. Investigators say the Aliceville teen resisted arrest and grabbed a gun, but his girlfriend, who was there, disputes those claims. On Monday night, protesters showed up to the Homewood City Council meeting with demands for city leaders. Some of those include releasing body camera video of the incident, a formal apology from the police chief and creating an independent civilian review board.
Domestic violence shelter facing funding concerns
A Jefferson County nonprofit that helps victims of domestic violence is seeing an increased need for their services. One Place claims requests for protective orders have gone up roughly 10 percent, as they are trying to navigate a potential challenge with funding. Executive Director Rebecca McWilliams says the organization relies on block grants for some of its resources. While it hasn't gotten any word on any funds that will definitely be cut, the concern still remains.

"Lulu's Law" passes U.S. Senate, now heads to House of Representatives
A bill named after a Mountain Brook teen has passed in the United States Senate. The bipartisan legislation introduced by Alabama Senator Katie Britt is named in honor of 16-year-old Lulu Gribbin, who survived a shark attack in 2024 off the Florida Gulf Coast. The bill would allow federal and local governments to send warnings to cell phones near the beach if a shark attacks someone nearby. State lawmakers passed a similar law earlier this year.

Calera City councilor demands quicker response to power outages
A Calera City council member says more needs to be done to restore power during outages. Council Member Kay Turner says when storms hit, the power is often knocked out and areas such as Emerald Ridge and Camden Park appear to be on the back end of getting restored. During the most recent outage, Turner claims multiple residents reached out to her demanding answers because the heat was too much to bear for people who have medical issues.
