JoAnn Nichols won another best of show award in the Wilkes County Quilt Guild’s 28th annual Quilt Show Friday and Saturday at the Stone Center in North Wilkesboro. Nichols’ overall winning entry was a 70-inch-by-92-inch panel quilt titled “Yuletide Season.” Judges and quilt show attendees both also chose it for top honors in the panel quilts category. The quilt’s pre-printed central image was a decorated Christmas tree, with an attic window style. It featured hand applique and embellishments.

The Ronda commissioners on Tuesday night approved a motion stating intent to voluntarily start a process for dissolving Ronda as a town. Commissioners Matthew Foster, Chris Nelson and Helen Porter voted for, while Commissioner Bobby Munsey voted against the motion. Munsey said in an interview later that that he will seek reversal of the action after the election on Nov. 3.

H.G. Greene General Store in the Clingman community, Wilkes County’s oldest retail business, turns 150 this year and has anniversary activities planned for Oct. 10. No registry exists for confirmation, but Google artificial intelligence indicates that Washburn’s General Store in the Rutherford County town of Bostic is the only true retail establishment in business longer (45 years more) than H.G. Greene.
