INTRODUCTION Central to the latest developments around Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the growing role of governments in shaping responsible business conduct (e.g., Kourula et al., 2019a). This trend is apparent in the emergence of disclosure regulation (Ioannou and Serafeim, 2019; Jackson et al., 2020; Knudsen and Brown, 2015), such as those established by the UK Modern Slavery Act, the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act or the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD).
