1 Introduction The recent growth in advanced clinical practice roles has refocused the debate on the core skills and capabilities required locally and regionally to practice at an advanced level. Reshaping the Workforce (Nuffield Trust 2016) by the Nuffield Trust identified the many benefits advanced clinical practice brings to patients, practitioners and employers, but also recognised the lack of clarity around the advanced practitioner role.

Discussion This study examined conversion to admission, 30-day ICD-10 prefix-concordant reattendance and 30-day all-cause mortality to assess the safety and effectiveness of SDEC within a pressured UEC system, using short-stay acute medical admissions as a low-acuity comparison group. Conversion to admission from SDEC was low overall, though varied by age, sex and site in crude analyses.
