What was your first job as a journalist?
I began my journalism career in Pocatello, ID, at KPVI News 6. I was an anchor, producer, and MMJ.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes.
How is social media changing news?
It's a sign of the times changing before people can adapt. News is having to change whether the old guard likes it or not.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Peter Parker.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
You have a responsibility to hold others accountable, including yourself, and to aim for the highest standard possible as a story teller.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#getitright and the video goes on to show an MMJ or Reporter doing 5-40 takes trying to get one standup just right.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Direct messages work just as good as any email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Adobe Premiere, Google Video, ENPS, MediaOS, Adobe Audition, and at times Adobe After Effects.

Why did you become a journalist?
I became a journalist to understand more about the world we live in and help the people around me understand it too.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, but I created a newspaper (only one edition) in my 10th-grade history class for a project. Does that count?
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I helped uncover a medicaid scheme taking place in Phoenix, AZ, which targeted the homeless population in several states.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
This job will chew you up and spit you out. And WHEN it happens, you must remember why this job means something to you.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime. News waits for nobody (including the journalists).
What's the best pitch you ever got?
"Bailey Zimmerman, the famous country singer, is about to have a warrant out for his arrest. Do you want to be the first to report on it?"
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
"Hey Julian, can you cover the weather today and talk about snow danger on the roads?"
What's your favorite drink?
Protein Shake.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
At home reading a book or at the gym (reading a book).
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The New York Times.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
My beat is "general," and that means I'm a jack of all trades (and master of none).
